I've been at LSU for two and a half years and I never realized how important a laptop is for taking notes in class until I borrowed the IBM ThinkPad from my office. In my Finance and ISDS classes, it was a great tool to take good notes so I decided on something unique and light.

I bought a new Core 2 Duo Apple MacBook. The midrange model suited my needs. 2.0Ghz dual core, 1GB Ram, 80GB hard drive and a DVD/RW. With my Apple discount through LSU, I paid 1500. That included the 3 year warranty. I looked at IBM ThinkPads, the only laptop that i think is worth a darn, but to get them equipped like my MacBook, they were in excess of 1500.

If you're thinking about getting a mac just to use for basic stuff, don't hesitate! They are amazing!!! It's very fast. Very clean and easy to get used to. The whole lack of a right click (unless you buy their bluetooth mouse called Mighty Mouse) doesn't phase me at all.

My laptop has been a very useful tool in my managerial economics class. We had to do a lot of regression analysis and forecasting. Without an excel you can't really participate in such classes.

I don't think it could have been useful for note taking - the MBA classes are mostly discussions so no notes are taken.

I'm becoming hooked to this thing. I think i've brought to every single one of my friend's houses since I got it. I love playing on it. Heck, right now, I'm using it. I've been up since 7:45am and I'm tired but I can't put it down!

I recently started using mine for taking notes too. Being an engineering student, I have become very good at entering mathematical equations into openoffice VERY fast.

Another good thing to do is record the lectures. Saved me several times in my history class that I had last semester.

The biggest thing to watch out for is the tendency to use the wireless internet while in class. That actually caused me to retake circuits. Turn the internet off and concentrate on the lecture.

Lenovo thinkpad R60 here.

I looked at the Z series as I wanted a widescreen notebook but it was expensive to get a Z series notebook with the Core 2 Due T7200, 1GB Ram, and a 80GB hard drive. I really wanted one but the Mac is a refreshing change from the WinXP PC that I built.
