I just put a new set of Michelin LTX MS2s on a 96 Ranger.
First of all, it only has 58,000 miles, loaded 4.0. It is actually a nice, clean little truck, new to me. First thing I did was swap the 14" wheels (used up) with a set of period correct Explorer 15" wheels. The included tires were usable house brand (PepBoys) but well past 50%. I commute 120 miles a day and one was out of balance or out of round. Stopped in a local Tire Kingdom and Michelin has their $70 mail in rebate, Tire Kingdom has a $50 card incentive so,,,, new Michelins it is! The ride is noticeably smoother and quieter. A short jaunt at 75mph and no shake!! wOOt !! wOOt !!
I was impressed with Tire Kingdom, the level of service was excellent. No attempts to over sell, was advised of a couple minor service issues and left with a smile.

Why feel silly over that for? Finding a good set of 15" Explorer wheels and installing good tires sounds smart to me. I don't imagine there are many 14" tires to choose from anymore.

Makes sense to me.

It's getting hard to find any decent 14" tires anymore, especially in stock locally.

Rangers really benefit from a quality tire in my experience. Their suspensions are hard on tires, and they need the traction. They'll eat cheap tires for lunch.

Don't feel silly, With a 120 mile commute, good tires are a plus. The Rat is a 4.0 4wd. It came to me with 235 75 15s and they make for a pretty good ride. Finding a decent 14" tire is getting hard. That is my 528e's stock wheel.

Good job I would say!
Nothing at all to feel silly about. Enjoy them and the peace of mind that you will not have to replace your tires for a long long time.

Silly because the tires are expensive and the truck is not.

How about your safety? Whats that worth? I say good job and if you keep the truck long enough it will pay for itself.

You can tell the people who keep their car up and plan to run it into the ground...those of us who are not afraid to pony up for michelins on an older car

Not that you have to spend big bucks, but...

Geez, those tires go 60k or more on 9500+ pound vans in our fleet and seem to last nearly forever on a 1500 Silverado!

I'm thinking you simply may never need a tire again...

Those are some great tires. I too took the plungs after having a few sets of cheaper tires on my Toyota Tacoms. With the Michelin MS2 tires the thumping is gone, the shaking is gone, the road noise is gone and I got a smooth ride. With the rebates from Michelin and the tire dealer the price installed was cheaper than I expected.

Kind of amazing, isn't it?

I have had more than one of my fleet guys come in after one of our trucks gets a new set of LTx's and ask what I did to the suspension!
