Not just any group III, but Shell XHVI base stock, correct? Probably the best group III base stock PERIOD.

I'm not quite sure why a) anyone would ask that about RT6, or b) why people have such an obsession about group number. All the great oils contain groups III, IV, and V, its just the percentages that vary. 100% of any one would make a crummy oil indeed!

"Performs great" and "Performs like the boutiques" are great examples of why UOAs and alot of the discussion on this forum have helped reinforce that oil-choosing is junk science.

I've seen non-synthetic $2/quart Pennzoil do as well as Rotella or a boutique over a normal run of 5-7k.

UOAs are terrible at deducing meaningful wear or oil condition at any time short of when they've already failed. So basically what we're observing is that almost no oil fails anymore unless it's grossly neglected.

But a few ticks higher or lower on a wear metal number that is essentially meaningless, and the oil starts to be seen as better or worse....

If I was making a successful product and someone wanted me to tell them how I did it and what ingredients are in , I would not tell them. the proof is in the pudding, so who cares. If it gets me there and Im not tearing up engines, Im ok. Yes study and education is a good thing, but how its made, Im no chemist, so I would not understand the lingo anyway. For example, im in my van for 12 to 20 hours at a time under load, so if T6 is good for an 18 wheeler, then Ive got faith that its good enough for a little old 318 dodge lead sled, guess what, it works great for me and I have used lots of oils in this dodge and I like the t6 best at the moment. Ok Im through...lol

Pardon me while I send in my raisin bran to a lab to confirm the vitamin and mineral content. Can't trust those darned corporations....

I may just have to switch over to one of the costly synthetic boutique oils who WILL tell me what I'm paying for.
I used to subscribe to that train of thought, but the fact that rotella syn returns similar numbers on UOA's to the boutique stuff (at least for standard OCIs) broke me away from that. Given that I have a warranty to worry about with my newer cummins and API licensing, and the fact that redline comes in at about 35 bucks a gallon these days, rotella syn or delvac 1 5w40 does me just fine. The only reason I would use redline these days is to give the crankcase and valvetrain a good cleaning, which the group v ester based oils are known to do. It's not like I'm turning the 6800-7000 rpms I was doing with my cobra, and based on my reading, I place the rotella xhvi base a step above your ordinary group III (III+ to be specific). If I were still driving my pos 6.blow ford with the heui, I might still be buying the boutique stuff.

Yeah, I'm sure you're correct. I doubt ANY name brand company is going to put out a junk oil. I just put T-6 in my car to try it out. Since it's carbureted and I live in a real cold climate and need more ZDDP than the average oil these days I need a diesel oil to handle all the fuel dilution and protect the cam and lifters. Since I change it so often it's really not worth paying the big bucks for a boutique.

The main reason I run Rotella syn 5W40 in my Jeep is for the extra ZDDP to keep the flat tappet cam/lifters and non-roller rockers alive for another 100K miles. The main reason I run it in the VW is because it's a cheap syn 5W40....and I use it because I refuse to play VW's oil spec games. lol

I have started using T6 in my Outback back in the spring. I have no complaints about it. I drive 100+ miles a day and I want a good 5w-40 oil. I was using PP 5w-40 Euro but I had to order it and it was costly. Glad I can pick up T6 just about anywhere here. I bought my last bottles at Advanced Auto... and yes I bought up just about all they had. I hoard.
