I cannot find a reliable handyman who does good work

how much do you guys think a handy mans hourly rate should be ?
It depends. Are you asking hourly rate that he is working on your job or are you including transit time and the time it took to agree to your job and assemble the tools and materials to complete it?

This is more of a rant than a question but where are you guys finding local handymen these days? I have some cabinets for a media center I need installed, slight drywall and electrical work. I set up dates with referred handymen by friends and neighbors and they don't show up or have other excuses. Does everybody have so much work these days?
I had a guy a few years back do some flooring. He was good and reliable but now is too old and isn't taking new work.

How are you guys finding handymen/ contractors?
Here in WV country you have to find and get hooked up to the old boy networks. I talk to a lot of people and have found a couple.
The guy who I buy firewood from knows people to get anything done. He got a roofer to put a new roof on my garage, sand and coat my cedar house, re-stain my deck and coat my driveway. He steered me to a country mechanic who fixed my old Ford 150. It's easier to do in the country because everybody knows everybody. Not easy in suburbia.

if i was your way id do the electrical for you.

It took us three years to find a contractor to remodel our master bathroom. The job wasn't " big enough" for most to bother- allegedly.

Having been in the plumbing business for years I know several good guys to do work.. I feel bad for those who have nobody.

And Angies List is a joke. My business subscribed to it for a short period. The people who contacted me were real flakes.

Best you can do is ask around. Maybe go to a local building supply place and see if they have any recommendations.

Guess I'd better move

I think almost all the guys that competent and will show up, are in a crew doing bigger projects, and getting paid well.

I live in the middle of 3 small towns so there are a few "handy people" that get recommended on facebook by others, and word gets around if someone doesn't do a good job. Even in a big city, word of mouth from people you know is probably the best way, and be a bit flexible on the timing, and also have enough stuff to keep them busy for a day, to make it worthwhile.

I am the handyman/contractor.

I do know a guy locally who does pretty good work for reasonable labor costs.
Not sure I'd put him on something time critical, but for other jobs he does show up and do the work pretty well, better than I could.
In general, it is hard to find people willing to get dirty and having the skills to complete a job.

I am currently having work done on my house. The workers do good work but the contractor leaves something to be desired. Poor communication and poor time management and forgetful. Forgot to order the windows.
Their reviews are good in terms of workmanship but people complain about the same things as me.

And to add. Over the years I worked with some incredibly talented craftsmen on very high end builds. Ultra custom stuff including cabinetry. These guys are getting old and retiring and dying off. I don't see that level of skill out there anymore.

My wife’s cousins want me to come out ti Cali and remodel their bathroom, last time I was there fixed and bunch of lights and some other stuff. My grandpa and uncle never did advertise and they were always busy. Sometimes I wonder if I went the wrong route, granted I know more now than when I was younger. I’m not craftsman but if a faucet needs replaced, plumbing fixed, outlet changed, roof patched I can do it. I’ve thought about trying it but with insurance etc makes me nervous .
