Went downstairs this morning and sat at the kitchen table, and looked out the sliding door, and saw this! Normally not a fan of spiders, but it was a great shot (albeit hard to focus through double paned glass that isn't exactly clean) Built a web between the the glass and the corner of the house (just beyond the door). I believe what is known as an "orb weaver" from the family Araneidae, waiting on more specific identification. She is about an inch from leg tip to leg tip.

For sure an Orb Weaver. Have them all over my yard this year - they're just now getting to be good eatin size. I've had them as big as half dollars in my yard.

+1 If my wife saw one of those, it would be blasted to death with Raid. She has zero tolerance for them.
 
Turned on the porch light, attracted all sorts of moths. Sat out there feeling all rednecky as this guy went to town...
 
used to be a orb weaver at my work that would build his web each night at the same time. I would feed him various insects and watch him eat.
 
Imagine working late at a power station, walking up and down dimly lit galvanised expanded metal stairs. the metallic clunk clunk of your heavy steelcap boots echoing off the structures, the radiated warmth of plant that had been shut down hot that day on your back.

You turn to walk down another flight of stairs, and snug the front of your cotton hi visibility jacket over your front, which is now exposed to the chill of a late autumn night. The heat you feel on your back makes the cool of the night on your front even more chilling.

Imagine walking face first into a 2" orb spider that has spun it's web at exactly face height, in the middle of the stairs.
 
I found this fella in my driveway last summer. He (or she?) was nice enough to wait for me to go inside and get the camera and tripod.

I did that 2 years ago - one had spun a web under the eve trough right by my deck. Walked right into him and FREAKED OUT.
