Hello everyone. My wife and I have a new 2012 Nissan Versa hatchback. We have owned it a month and it has 707 miles on it. The owners manual of the car says that in severe service driving (stop and go, short trips, hills, etc...we live in the mountains) you should change the oil every 3750 miles. To stay under the coverage of the warranty (this is my first new car and I am a bit nervous) I want to stay with the manufactures suggested oil change intervals rather than go 10K miles between oil changes, etc.
What I want to know is, is Amsoil really any better than other oils on the market? To be honest, do I NEED a synthetic oil in this car or should I just stick with a conventional oil that meets the engines specs and call it a day? I am wondering because I can get 4qts oil Amsoil 5w30 and their EA oil filter for $30 (wholesale price) per oil change. I realize that the most important thing is to change your oil and filter like you should....that matters more that what oil and filter you use. That being said, is Amsoil with the $30 per oil change? Is it really better than other well known brands or is it just "multilevel marketing" hype?

For a 3,750 mile OCI, I would not look at any synthetics, I would find a high quality conventional and call it a day--at least until you are out of warranty. Any use of synthetics IMHO would be a complete waste for such a short change interval.

Agreed. amsoil is an excellent product, no doubt, but just not needed for such short intervals.

So in my case with such short oil change intervals....any quality oil and filter will do? If that is the case, what is the point of something like Amsoil? Is it simply about the extended drain intervals?

I'd pass on the Amsoil. It's a good oil with a lot of hype here on BITOG. Follow the OM and use a good off the shelf API, OEM approved, store bought oil. Your car will last just as long, and you won't have to pay a PC fee or wait for the brown truck to get your oil. If you look for sales you'll save even more money.

I have never been disappointed by Amsoil products. period. you could use their "OEM" line of oil with that OCI. unfortunately, most of the oil change specials these days run more than $30. certainly any dino should do just fine at 3750 miles. of course, I run synthetics regardless.

+1 - I use Amsoil in my differentials and I think it is great oil and has its use (like 10K+ OCIs). However, I do not think it would not be very cost effective in your application; even the lowest aka least expensive Amsoil product would be more expensive than an OTC oil.

I would be looking at PYB, MS5K, QSAD, Peak, Kendall GT-1, Chevron Supreme, NextGen, or Havoline DS oils on special (check the promotions section). Any of these coupled with a OEM, Purolator, or WIX filter would be more than adequate for your needs.

3750 is SEVERE duty. I don't care if dino or synthetic every 3750 and your not doing a paper route or delivering pizzas is ridiculous in this day and age. What is normal duty? I'd run Amsoil XL line with 6,000 OCI or every 6 months.

The OP being in the mountains, that could/would be considered "severe duty"......

So yes, I'd stick with the manufacturer recommended, and just use whatever you can find the cheapest conventional oil.....and keep good records.....lol.

Since you aren't doing extended oil changes stick with Amsoil OE or XL. These really are good oils, especially at the Preferred Customer (PC) prices. $30 Amsoil oil change. That's hard to beat.

Watch the ads, you can get a Mobil 1 or PP oil change special with a good filter for around $30.00 or so. Change it every 3750 miles and you're golden.

I'm not trying to talk you out of using Amsoil but if you are not extending drains, I see little value in their oils vs what you can obtain at Walmart.

If you want to use Amsoil, go with OE or XL.

And if you're using Amsoil, go with Pablo.

My suggestion is AMSOIL OE @ 3,750 mile OCI with a high quality oil filter [WIX, Napa Gold etc.]Dino oil would be fine but obviously by your post you want the best quality oil for your vehicle so go for it, also consider a Used Oil Analysis at some point.
AMSOILS marketing approach puts them in a position to provide excellent customer service so take advantage of that:
1. User friendly and up to date web site
2. Ship product to your door > my favorite
3. Informed and educated Dealers to help with choices and
provide advice.
4. Product Data Sheets that are complete and current.

Toto.

If you want to use Amsoil, do what Pablo suggested. There's no need to go for their top end product for 3750 mile OCIs. I don't believe there's a benefit in using a synthetic for such a short OCI in the first place, but that's your decision to make.
