So the original poster has a valid point. However Toyota sells many more larger vehicles and is only 3 tenths behind Honda so Honda’s not doing all that well. In fact I feel that Honda has really fallen behind the competition in the efficiency of their cars focusing more on hybrids, fuel cells cars, robots, ugly duckling styling rather than making their cars lighter and more efficient through materials and technology of the engines and chassis.

Ok.... how come you didn't include the:

Genesis 4.6l V8
Genesis 3.8l V6
Heavy Azera with big 3.8L v6?

The CR-V and RDX shouldn't even be included as "Big cars".

and.. you have seperate Honda and Acura.. they don't go together.. notice how Hyundai and Kia are seperated.

Hyundai has REALLY turned itself around in the last decade.
I'll take a Hyundai over any domestic manufacturer...they're right up there with the elite Japanese automakers that are light years ahead of the game.

Yeah they are .4mpg ahead of Honda.....give me a break.

Look at GM at under 25 mpg....

PT, I think you should also compare MSRP, to see how much you are really saving, as well as the 100K warranty, etc. My parents are on their 4th Hyundai. First three went 100K plus without problems, aside from the bad driving, late braking pilot mod to the front end.

OPEC should be the one bailing them out, not us taxpayers.

that's actually right on par with everyone else if you take into account all the trucks and sports cars they sell. for instance compare sales of the silverado/sierra to the tundra or titan, it's laughable

and tell me who else on that list offers 505 hp and 24 mpg? hyundai's genesis coupe has 306 hp and gets 26 mpg. the 370z is a little better at 332 hp and 26 mpg. GM has top fuel economy in a lot of classes, your blind hatred for them just causes you to look past the facts.

btw for comparison...the new 3.7L mustang will get 30 mpg and the camaro ls gets 29. and both have over 300 hp on regular gas while many of the imports struggle to make that much hp on premium. what do you think of that?

sure is good for the average fuel economy to not have to sell pickups, vans, etc...

Is this a weighted average based on numbers of vehicles sold by model then compiled by maker?

Whatever the case it will hopefully spur some innovation on the part of Honda, Toyota, Chrysler and GM. It would be great for consumers if there were a more noticeable battle between the makers touting their fuel efficiency innovations. GM has been doing it with Honda and Toyota (I think) which is invigorating but let's face it, fuel efficiency doesn't seem to be tops on every one's list.

There's more to a car than horsepower:
Yeah that Camaro LS makes 306 hp but it's also 500 lbs heavier than a Nissan Altima Coupe 3.5L SE...which means even though the Altima Coupe makes 36 less hp, it has a better horsepower to weight ratio.

and yet the camaro's still faster due to torque curve and right-wheel drive. look up quarter mile times if you don't believe me. and it's fuel economy is even that much more impressive now that u mention its weight

but anyway i don't wanna get into an argument over power my point was that domestic manufacturers are right there with the imports in terms of fuel economy in every segment, and are on top in most. their CAFE averages are just penalized more so than the imports because of the vast number of trucks/SUVs they sell

Better weight to HP ratio dosen't mean faster. According to most magazines, which I hate to use but they are both so new it is really all that is out there. I used Motor Trend, the Altima on average runs ran 14.60s, the Camaro on average runs ran 14.20's

The Altima takes 135 feet to stop from 60, the V6 Camaro 109 feet. Both have brake fade but the Camaro stoped better intially and over time was the commnet that was made.

The Altima goes through the slalom at 64.5 MPH, The V6 Camaro in 66.1 Mph.

So yeah you are right, there is more to a car then horsepower. To bad the Altima's pony power to weight ratio does not help it.

2011. the current v6 is waaay past its prime, it's embarassing. but the new 3.7 is supposed to have 305 hp, get 30 mpg, and weigh in under 3500 lbs. i'm pretty sure it's gonna be my next car

GM sells more trucks that customers want so that hurts the numbers the most. Honda and Hyudai don't offer trucks so there's and automatic bump in avg. MPG for them. (I don't consider the Ridgeline a truck). Plus GM has muscle cars that Japan really doesn't offer. If you look at the latest GM car offerings you will see models such as Malibu and Equinox that tops the competition in fuel economy. So- there is improvements being made, but yeah GM needs to do better than 25mpg overall...but take out trucks and GM is doing great!
