Hyundai Santa Fe oil recommendation

My noise was only on cold starts as well. I have heard someone describe it as a "cam phaser" noise. I don't know what that is, but it sounds similar to what you've heard. I also don't know how a choice of oils could affect whether it occurs or not. Maybe someone else on BITOG could explain that.

EDIT: I was just doing some reading about variable cam timing on wikipedia. Apparently there is a valve that shoots engine oil onto the cam phaser at startup. Perhaps this is the noise we are hearing. I also wonder if maybe there is something about Synpower that coats better than other oils I've tried and, therefore, I don't hear the noise at startup as often.

Does this seem plausible to anyone?

Sounds reasonable to me and would explain things.
Now for the fix: Synpower?
I may have to try it just to satisfy my curiosity.
Otherwise plain old Valvoline conventional or Pennzoil Conventional and live with it.

Thanks for sharing your research.

Use Quaker State 5W-20 and follow the recommended service intervals.

I'm looking for an oil recommendation for my 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 v6 AWD.
The car now has 18,000 miles on it and I do my own oil changes except for once the dealer did it.
My owner's manual actually recommends Quaker State, so that's what I used the first time. Second time the dealer did it using "Trop Arctic", I'm sure it was bulk and I don't know if it was regular or synthetic.
The next two oil changes I used Castrol GTX and finally this last time, I used Quaker State Ultimate Durability.
All is 5-20 and ALWAYS use a Hyundai filter.
I am severe service, specially in a cold climate, so I stay with Hyundai's schedule.
These engines make a little racket when started cold, so I'm trying to minimize that, but have had no luck. What ever 'flavor' the dealer put it, made it noisier, IMO.

So, any comments on what to use?
Is there much difference between Quaker State Ultimate Durability and Pennzoil Platinum?
What about the blends, Motorcraft, etc.
Again, I stick with Hyundai's severe schedule of 3750 mile/6 months.
Sorry this is long and thanks!

What it is, is normal. Hyundai is more concerned with fuel economy at this moment than they are with smoothness and quiet.

A little racket on the v6 3.5 ??? They sound like they have no oil in them, They are just as loud as the old oldsmobile diesels lol of the early 80's ..
I have two (leased) v6 santa fe's and i love them but i always start them up with the radio cranked..
Its funny i have been in the engine business a long time and i have seen many engines and it seems they are getting louder and louder as the years go by especially with the vvt.
As for Hyundai i like them a lot.

I remember the old Olds diesels, good comparison.
So, being an engine guy, you're not worried about the noise?
I guess it can't be be too bad, I haven't heard of any blowing up.
For me, it's just annoying, but does seem louder that other cars I've had.
Just my $0.02

it is loud and i know for a fact some people that sue under lemon law win new cars because of it.
My Santa Fe is leased and under warranty so its their problem either way..
Be careful with your oil changes car dealers always try to blame the customer but they almost always lose in court..

There was a bulletin that went from corporate to the dealers that said the noise can happen when not using the OEM filter. The OEM filter is reasonably priced and built well, so no need to deviate from that.
