Hydraulic vs. eng. filter microns.

How would the micron/filtering efficiency of a Puralator Pure 1 engine filter work out on a hydraulic system designed for a 10 micron (I think) hydraulic filter?

Would the Purolator filter finer? Would it flow enough in a hydraulic system?

Quite often they are the same. Case in point Hasting and Baldwin often list a given filter as both for Hydralic service and Crankcse filtration. Instead of trying to find a trick way of getting better filtration just pick a filter that has the filtration you are looking for that will fit your oil filter adapater.

It would probably work fine as long as it will take the pressure of the hydralic system. Bear in mind though that the pure one is probably a 25 micron filter not a 10 micron filter. Best to stick with filters that are dual rated since hydralic systems tend to be expensive. The bigest enemy to hydralic systems is moisture and dirt that get intot he system. This is especialy the case with the bulk hydralic fluid wich is seldom kept dry and clean. I often woundered why hydralic systems did not use a centrifuge system to remove the dirt since these are reusable and a filter able to obsorb abd trap moisture.
 
I tend to agree with John

Hydraulic filters, in general, can be finer since they don't have the loading that combustion byproducts perpetually introduce into the system. Most (a good many of them) are your typical FL1A size filter.

There are automotive filters that are the same thread as common hydraulic filters (1-12) ..but they're not as fine filtering. You can't go the other way around though. Hydraulic filters typically don't have bypass or ADBV. Bypass action is usually handled by the filter mount in hydraulic applications.

Jag takes a 1-12 thread ..so do like engine'd Lincolns.
 
you need to worry about flow as well as microns. Hydraulic filters are rated with Beta ratings, basically giving you the % designed to trap different sized particles. Ratings are generally on the filter specs or web sites. Here you can see 6 otherwise identical filters
