...Yes, actually. That's painfully elementary but it's a start.

I gave you another example in my post; guess you missed it.

Check out scholar.google.com, too. See what's really being done rather than what's making school admins feel warm and fuzzy.

Or, better yet, drop in on some cognitive and developmental psychology classes at a local accredited university. If you think Gardner is a representative example, it'll be like walking into a steakhouse thinking tofu burgers are beef.

I think you might have misunderstood what I was saying (or I wasn't clear about it).

I think (like the cognitive psychologists do) that Gardner is a crock and that his theories (using that term in the loosest sense possible) are a joke and are unsupported by any research that would pass scientific scrutiny.

My favorite Gardner quote (to paraphrase) when asked why he called them multiple intelligences, "Well if I had called them talents no one would have paid any attention."

The problem is the work of the cognitive psychologists is not what makes it into the classroom. Its Gardner and his ilk.

I can't tell you how elated I am to see phonics actually making a (slow) comeback after a majority of the public schools (the Catholic schools still held on to it) abandoned it in favor of whole language learning and its more current b*st*rd son "balanced literacy".

Ah, okay. Yes, now it sounds like we agree a lot more than I had thought.

Cool.

BTW, ever read any of the following:
E.D. Hirsch - Cultural Literacy
Adler - The Paideia Proposal
Chall - The Academic Achievement Challenge (this one is specifically about reading programs and the nonsense that's happened in that area since about 1930).
Ravitch - Left Back: A century of battles over school reform (chronicling from about 1900 through mid 1990)
Rochester - Class Warfare

If not, I suggest picking up a few (Hirsch and Adler at the bare minimum).

that ad is so far removed from reailty it ain't funny. always will be.

pencil and paper for me. and teachers with chalkboard.

You know my mom always said that as a young adult she firmly believed that she would be able to take a holiday on the moon. no kidding. she was 24 when the moonlanding happened. these things just don't pan out the way we like them.
