Hi all…. Made the switch to HPL 5w30 in my 2016 Outback 3.6. I have had the car 2.5 years and the oil has never moved off full between 6000 mi changes. Trying to understand why it would all of a sudden be using oil. Added a 1/2 a quart or so at 2500 miles. Thoughts comments…. And no there are zero leaks.

HPL has cleansing properties like Valvoline Restore and Protect (but costs more and has other positive attributes). I suspect the HPL is cleaning carbon deposits. This has been what's seen when using Valvoline Restore and Protect. First some oil consumption, then it stops, but you have a clean engine with no stuck rings. Stick with the HPL and let it do its magic.

When using Valvoline Restore and Protect in my Honda it burned oil the first 2 oil changes when it first came out and it did on the first run I did this year as well. My Honda did not burn any oil prior to running Valvoline Restore and Protect then and now but whatever is cleaning the rings caused it to burn some. The last time I changed it was a couple of weeks ago and it has about 1500 miles on it now with no burning. And when I mean burning, I mean visible smoke like a mosquito sprayer truck. I resolved the stuck rings shortly after I bought it and about 2 yrs before Valvoline Restore and Protect came out.
I believe it dislodges some carbon and causes a temporary "stuck ring" until it dissolves whatever was stuck and then goes away. Lots of people have noticed it and this is probably what HPL is doing in your Subaru. Give it time to finish cleaning and just keep it topped off.

You know I have no idea if it was ever done by the previous owner and had not given it much thought as all has been fine but I think just for good measure I well inspect and most likely replace it.
I plan on proactively replacing mine at some point before 50k-60k miles. Just buy and replace it. Cheap insurance.

why not just keep using what you had before the HPL ?
Yeah good point but who on here ever leaves well enough alone and besides I wanted to try the new flavor of the month :p. If it keeps up I may switch back but I will give this a couple of changes to see if anything improves. Good candidate for extended drains in my fleet.

Switching to HPL PCMO 5W-30 has reduced the oil consumption in my Buick from ~1qt/5k mi (since new) to ~1qt/10k mi. I believe the consumption is through the PCV system. Your engine is in good hands with that oil, stick with it. Did you run a OCI with HPL Engine Cleaner 30 first?

Considering there was no consumption at all before I'm not inclined to think it is the PCV but it is possible. I did not run the cleaner first. So it very well maybe just the cleaning effect. Time will tell.

*I believe my consumption is through the PCV. Time should tell with yours.

It would be interesting if you stuck with it and updated us. Like others discussed, multiple people have had burning with Valvoline Restore and Protect initially and then it went away. Please update the thread with how it changes.

up until the switch it had used no oil at all car only has 65k. So I am not betting on the PCV. Only difference was switching oils. When I get time I will pull the PCV valve and inspect and or replace. I intend to do at least another change with the HPL as I am curios as well.

In one of my subarus HPL consumption nearly stops after 9,000-10,000 miles, regardless of viscosity used. It behooves me to run HPL as long as possible in that engine for overall less consumption. See what happens throughout your interval.

So it burns every time you change it and then stops around 9k? Did I understand that correctly?
