HP laptop display "washed out"

My 1 year old HP Pavilion dm4-1160's display sometimes looks very "washed out" where it gets too white, the colors look dull and dim, and gray areas of the desktop look white. This happens on both my computer's LCD screen, and on my external monitor. It takes an hour or so for this effect to happen.

This has Intel integrated graphics, Win7 Home Premium, and a 14" display.

I'm stumped.

Did you check the power settings ?

Are all your graphics drivers up to date.

Lastly do a thorough FULL scan of your computer with a good security suite AND a stand alone, the best is Malwarebytes...(Malwarebytes.org) I would also run MRT (Microsoft Malicious Software Removal tool) simply go to the run box and type in MRT and click ok, then it will ask it you want to do a full or quick scan do the full scan. It will take some time but let it run till it finishes.

It is possible that a malicious program is altering graphics settings ....

I ran anti-malware scans that turned up nothing. The display is fine when the computer's on battery power, then gets too white/bright when on the charger. Likely a display setting I need to change.

See if you can change the gamma settings.

This happened on a couple portable DVD players we had years ago. They ended up being defective. Don't remember exactly what the problem was.

Check the driver for the charging system, also it could be that the charger is worn out or has become defective.

Lastly it could be a power setting or HP specific display setting . Often times HP has custom display settings.

I would call HP or post on their community forums they could help you better.

Knock on wood, it hasn't been washed out since posting. Maybe it needed an update that arrived yesterday, since it was busy doing its automatic updates.

About that security scan...?

At least do a full scan with MRT MS malicious software removal tool it is on your system right now..

Go to the run box, type in [ MRT ] and click OK set the scanner to do a full scan. Let it complete . You might be surprised at what you'll find if you don't run a security suite.
