how to stop start up noise.

@ OP:

Come to think of it: you've been using thicker oil/oil thickener all along to keep your oil burning engine under control (reduce oil burning), so it's not unknown that your oil becomes too "thick" during cold start up.

Unless you wanna switch back to using 5W30, otherwise, you just have to learn to live with it (noise).

I'd try the MMO route.....next time it needs a top off (hits the add line) add a pint of MMO (16 oz....basically, half of a quart). You should be able to find the pints at walmart.....

If the noise still occurs, then it's not the oil thickness being the problem....

Then try other filters....I've heard of some oil filters just being "noisier" than others....hehe.

If that doesn't solve it....look into mechanical.....


MMO in the oil though does 2 things, thins down the oil a bit (particularly for the winter months, it's good it'll let the oil flow better...) and also has mild detergents to help clean up the valves, crankcase, etc.....

Just remember to monitor your oil level. And don't go more than 3k after adding the MMO....even though some say the MMO "burns off" the properties are still suspended within the oil, you want to get that [censored] out of your pan.....so don't ride it longer than 3k....

I second the changing of the oil filter. My '03 Tiburon had a little clatter at startup with any filter but the OEM that I got from the dealer. My '02 Mustang GT is the same way if I don't use the FL820S.

Pull the fuel pump fuse so that the car will crank but not start. Crank it for 10-15 seconds. Put the fuse back in. Immediately start it up and see if still makes the noise.

If it doesn't make the noise then either the oil is a little too thick and/or the filter is draining. Either way the system isn't building pressure and getting the oil circulating fast enough.

Ad rock thats s good idea. It only does it once in awhile not even all the time in the cold its really weird

Check and see if you have dark soot around your exhaust manifolds. I thought I had developed the infamous "piston slap" or a rod bearing was going on my 04 2500 hd. Turned out 4 manifold bolts had broken of and causes it to knock/slap until it gets to 160 degrees, gaskets then expand and seal up.

A friend who owns a garage said he sees it all the time and told me what it was without looking at it. I bet the significant number of people who think they have "slap" actually have a leaky manifold(s).

Sure. Mmo or seafoam. My old lady's3.0 in a chrysler minivan. I changed the oil. The tick was there poured in a can of seafood. Tick gone within moments. Ran oil for 3500 kms and drained it. Now before I seafoamed it I could see nothing in fill hole. After this change to Pennzoil conventional I will take and post pics. It's already going from
black to more brownish. I will seafoam with 1500 left before next change
