Hi Guys, i have a couple of questions here regarding a 6X8 Home made trailer with springs, lights, decent floors, and a 16Ft boat Trailer. I would like to sell both of them on CL, but they have not been on the road in a couple of years.. They still have plates on them, tires are good, all that good stuff, but, how would the other person register these? I dont see Vin on them, also i dont have any titles... I was thinking just selling them, then the next owner could just register them as a Custom/Homemade trailers with Under 1,000Lbs weight. Is that as easy it is? I do have just a expired reg from 2005 for just the boat trailer, and on it, it reads NONTRANSFERABLE. Also i dont even "own" them, they are from my father who passed in 06, and they have been sitting since. Also, i know nothing of how to value these, so some insight would help. What would YOU pay for these trailers. I am going to sell them independent of each other. Thanks very much.

Most states don't even title trailers under 3k lbs.

I bet the axle has a serial number, since you know the plate number, go to the DMV and see what they have on file.

If one makes a home made trailer they probably have to prove they paid sales tax on the parts. So your offering of a bill of sale would likely help skip a few steps.

I would offer a bill of sale and xerox of the old registration. If the guy comes back, obviously it wasn't enough.

If you're ever in Maine, register it here, our registrations ARE transferrable and ARE also proof of ownership. And you don't need to be a resident.. somehow... for trailers... look at all the semi trailers with Maine plates. All you need for a pre 1995 vehicle or any year Operations like Broadway Title use this to "fix" lost paperwork on barn find cars etc.

I would not expect more than $400-500 each.

maybe just somehow someone will be local from my area, and on BITOG... haha yeah right.

Thanks!. Although i still dont know what im doing... So should a bill of sale be good, or should they next owners say they built it or something like that, and then the DMV will let them register it because they think they built it? Im going to give the local DMV a call. and see what they say.. Thanks!. :-D

Edit time ran out as i was typing..

EDIT: So i called DMV to ask about the trailers, and The lady shocked me when she asked for the plate numbers, then after told me all the info i needed to know about each one. What i know now is, one trailer is NON-transferable, and one trailer is. Also i will need to take in the death certificate, and they will sign them over to me, and have me register them as transferable, then i can sign them over to the next owner.. So i will do that.. But a trip to Maine is looking pretty nice! I have family up that a way by
Biddeford/Portland areas.
