As I'm refurbing our (2003-built) home I occasionally come across some head-scratchers. Yesterday I started to work in the master bath. First order of business was to snug up the drop ear for the shower, which had a very annoying up & down "nod." Had to cut a 3" x 5" section of the drywall, and despite all three mounting screws being present, the issue was obvious.
The builder installed a pair of horizontal supports between the studs. The top one, however, was about 3/4" further back that the bottom one. And to make it worse, he inserted the two lower mounting screws into the crack between the studs. The top screw was only about halfway home since that top support was set back by that 3/4-inch. No wonder the shower arm "nodded." I didn't think to take a pic, but it kind of looked like this:
Super-easy fix with a 3/4" hunk of oak baseboard installed as a shim for that top stud, topped by a fresh piece of 1x6 mounted perpendicular to provide a fresh mounting surface (and to bring the drop ear a bit closer).
Super cheesy job by the plumber (I'm guessing). No QC whatsoever. Almost every day it's something new.
