Run Spybot a few times. I used to get the DivX adware-supported installation package and run Spybot a few times to get rid of the [censored], it always worked fine after that.

If you don't want the spyware, I would try Pidgin. It just lets you chat online like you wanted to do to begin with. It has some nice features as well, and it's OpenSource. http://www.pidgin.im is the site. We use this at work all the time for conversing with our partners and cohorts.

No. Spybot is not for Mac.

AIM comes with that infernal Talkback software attached. If AIM crashes, which the new version, to which I should have never "upgraded" to AIM version 1.0b3 (33), because Talkback starts "gathering" information. Talkback cannot be cancelled and even if I reboot, Talkback will pop up again demanding to "gather information." The nasty AOL folks explain with many words how my privacy is their greatest concern, and how they gather information relevant only to the crashing of their trashy AIM software.

"What were you doing when AIM crashed?"
"I was uninstalling effing AIM."

It's like ICQ, only many more people use AIM. AOL Instant Messenger. Sooner or later you may have found out on your own.

Is use Pidgin on my Linux machine. It's far less user friendly than AIM. My mistake was to upgrade AIM. I have had the same version for Mac for many years. Now they have a new beta every other week, and it's always buggy. It really doesn't matter much, because I usually use iChat instead. Only sometimes I need to use more than one account at the same time. Then I launch AIM.

Others don't care for Talkback either. It seems to be mostly a compatibility issue.

Anyway, I want to know if there's a way to simply disable Talkback. Can I remove it from the package contents? I am not looking for other IM programs.

I would suggest you search for it on Google, but I'm afraid you might respond with "What is Google?".
