how to determine amount of paint needed

I wouldn't bother measuring, nor pay much attention to the guide on the can. There are too many variables. For 1 room, buy 1 gallon. If you are getting close to running out, buy another quart or gallon, and mix. I've painted the interior (including ceilings), and exterior of our house, and have never measured anything. For interior, I used a 9" pad. It was less messy, and does great on edges vs. a roller.

If there are windows, finish with the window wall. If you have to use different paint, you aren't going to see the shade difference because of the contrast of all the light coming in.

Will buy good paint and the hardware store is about 500ft away.

Plan on two coats, you're changing color.
