How to check OBD2 codes on 02 Malibu?

You can't. Easiest and freeist (how's that for spelling mori!) thing to do is head to Autozone - they'll hook up a reader for free.
there is no way you can read the codes w/o a scanner on OBD-II systems. Go to AutoZone for free hookups instead.

I used to have a Sentra SE-R and it had OBD2 and there was a trick with turning on the ignition (but dont start), push down the gas pedal a certain # of times in 5 seconds, hold it down and then count the number of flashes on the dash. Each flash corresponded to one digit in the OBD2 code. I was hoping GM had a similar method???

Chrysler did have a method, not sure if they do anymore.

The code readers are pretty cheap now at Walmart (under $50) that is makes sense for even a shadetree mechanic to have one.
I have...You can buy an ACTRON pocket scanner cheap. You can get full read outs of possible causes of the OBDII codes online after you grab the code. You can even erase codes with it. Of course, erasing codes without fixing the problem will just mean they'll come back, but you have that option if you fix the problem.
Considering dealers charge 50-75 just for pulling a code, there's no excuse for not having one nowadays.

I have not used the ones from Walmart but they look better than the real cheap one I ordered from HF (and returned) a few years ago.
I have a cable and software that allows my Palm to be a OBDII code reader, but am a little frustrated because the company has come out with new versions for a pocket PC and a laptop, but because Palm does not support some new functions they want to use, they have not updated the Palm version in a year or two. So when I have a car that uses CAN, I am not sure whether I will upgrade what I have or buy a new code reader.

You could tell your wife you need a ScanGauge II and beside all the other things it does you can read codes, too.
