I just finished building a 5hp briggs engine from new parts that I've been collecting for a while. It's a steel bore. How should I break this thing in? I've never had a new engine before....

zmoz, it's totaly up to you of course, but if it were me i would run it on a good 30hd dino for around 4 or 5 hrs of use and then switch it to a full synth, or if you want to stay with a dino, a 15w40 mixed fleet dino, maybe pennzoil longlife, or chevron delo, or mobil delvac. make sure to run it till it reaches normal operating temp, and then drain it, getting all the "break in" shavings, etc out. penzdude.

What is the application? I build 5hp WKA kart engines. Basically I run them under a light load for 15-20 minutes, change oil and put 'em on the track.

Alright, I let it idle until it got hot, then turned it off. Should the oil be black already??

I used 30HD...it looks like what comes out of a car at 4000 miles...

not sure if it should be black, but get it out. might just be because of the new parts etc. change the oil pronto. might be from idling the motor till operating temps were reached, instead of regular full throttle. {unburned fuel, carbon}. anyone? penz

On closer inspection the oil isn't really black...but has so many metal particles in it that it looks black.

Motor still looks ok inside though...

ZmOz, You might want to vary the load on the motor for the first 20 hours or so. That's probably more important than the oil choice as you shouldn't be leaving any oil in long enough for it to be sheared down or have even the skimpiest add pack depleted. Any form of a 30 weight (straight or multi-vis) is probably OK.

Whatever you end up using, I'd keep changing the oil every 1-2 hours of run time until the visible "sparklies" disappear. If after the 3rd time, you still have metal soup, something might have been assembled incorrectly.

Hard to say what your normal drain interval should be without knowing the application.

When you speak of a 5 HP engine, I immediately think of Briggs & Stratton engines. Am I right? Sam and Dave on the Spike TV 'Two Guy's Garage' TV show just rebuild a racing go cart 5 HP B & S engine. It was the I/C version of the 5 HP and set up for racing. They kept remarking how straight forward it was and how easy to rebuild.

I saw that show too and there was ALOT of the finer points left out in rebuilding the 5hp Briggs for racing. For example, they didn't do anything to seal the valves. And you can spend hours getting your valve spring pressure correct and cam dialed in.
