how raise the idle speed on a mower?

I have a Snapper walk behind, with a briggs 7.25ex, 190 cc motor. 2 or 3 years old, bought from a neighbor, "idles" too slow, and has since I owned it. not really the idle, its the operating speed of the engine.
it needs to run just a little faster, and if you take the top engine cover off, and look at the throttle spring, if the throttle spring was 1/16 shorter, (pulling more toward the front of the engine)the operating speed is great.
so how do you adjust the running speed? nothing in the manual.

You need to adjust the governor.

My Lawnboy Duraforce 2-cycle is 18 years old and I increase the speed by turning the air vane above the carburetor clockwise. I don't know the Briggs setup though. Here's picture of what I'm talking about...

On a Briggs, the bracket holding the stationary end of the spring is usually bendable. You should use a tach to set it up. I don't think you want more than 3600 rpm with no load.

most are set to 3000-3200 IIRC. 3450 or so is the max allowed by law with a 21" blade= 19000ft/s blade tip speed.
(this is for residential equipment)

It has a throttle lever? I wish my 3-4 year old troybilt did.

My Snapper is older and has a Briggs Quantum engine that is ok but not great. It has a spring and sliding lever that if you run it into a tree or bush just right then it is throttled down. I have to occasionally slide it to bump the rpm's back up. Not sure if yours is this way or not but pictures would help.

Okay. I went out to my garage to look at my like new (in a box) Briggs professional engine. Mine has a bendable tab to adjust the RPM near the carb. Does your engine have this same setup?

Use a needle nose pliers and shorten the spring slightly. Not to much.
My Honda engine has an extra hole that does just that, increase the running speed.

If he has the same setup as pictured above, all he has to do is bend the bendable tab. This is how Briggs does things.

no not like that , mine is a 2012 engine 7.25ex

not on my 2012 7.25 ex (has a throttle lever on the up handle , and no bendable tab, wish it had a bendable tab

So you have a flat head engine. How about taking a few pictures of your throttle cable and governor spring?

Where your throttle is shouldn't matter as the actual engine speed is
controlled by the governor. Tightening the spring affects the governed
rpm.

Thanks to all, -----my tab which I thought was a small angle piece ( that could not bend) was in fact two straight pieces with some dust and maybe grease in the angle crack, did not look like any posted pix, , . so it does bend but has a throttle lever on the handlebars attached to it. I bent it some and it seems far better.

I had called briggs and they offer nothing on operating speed adjustment, maybe afraid the mower will blow up at high speed? mine was just super slow
