Any rust inside the can? How flexible was the rubber ADBV? Looks like Purolator built that one.

I'd cut open the one that's on the car after your next oil change to see how actually using it panned out before installing the last old one.
 
Last year I bought two Motorcraft FL784 at WalMart for $0.50 each (yes, that's 50 cents!!!). These fit the early Ford 6.9 and 7.3L IDI diesels and normally cost about $7 at WM. The boxes are the same in appearance as the one illustrated above. They have the following date codes:

909250216 (presumably (9) 09-25-02 (16)

and

903280116 (presumably (9) 03-28-01 (16)

If you have an older filter that is not shrink-wrapped, stretch a nitrile glove over the opening, with a packet of silca gel shoved into one of the fingers. That's what I do also with old filters (less the silca) after they are drained so they don't drool. I use the most intact of the gloves I used for the oil changed.
