The reason I ask is my GM manual says to change the air filter after the first oil change following 50,000 miles. It is a GM 2010 Savana with a 5.3L.

When to Inspect the Engine Air
Cleaner/Filter
Inspect the air cleaner/filter at the Maintenance II
intervals and replace it at the first oil change after each
50,000 mile (80 000 km) interval

It seems like that is a long time 50K to use the same air filter?
It does say to inspect the AF and IF it needs to be change than change it. But if it appears to be clean than continue to use it till 50K and then replace it.

What kind of mileage are you getting out of your AF?
I live in dusty dirty desert air and drive off road frequently. What sort of mileage can I expect from an AF under these conditions?

Yes I do, I often follow friends vehicles down dusty dirty wash board roads to get to fishing locations. When I am not following a vehicle I am regularly driving dusty sandy roads solo. My vehicle is regularly covered in light dust/dirt.
