How NOT to check your fuel level!

So my Mother's 3 or 4 yr old Briggs 3.5 on her mower was running rough lately (surging)...so I took the carb apart to clean and replace the gasket/ diaphragm (per Donyboy73's excellent video)...i noticed there was a lot of dirt and junk in the carb as well as in the gas tank..

I mentioned this to my Mom and she said "oh, maybe I shouldn't be checking the fuel level by sticking my (dirty, gardening gloved) finger in the tank?"..... Uh, yeah...no more sticking a mud covered, gloved finger in the tank!

On Car Talk yesterday a lady pushed in a 3" nail to open the flap so she could see how much gas was in the car's gas tank. She dropped the nail into the gas tank.

Time to bring up the old "sock as an oil cap" thread for the new guys.

So, the cap the guy lost, and replaced with a sock, was the "710" cap?
