How much oil should be in the filter upon removal?

When you remove a used filter and cut it open, how much oil should there be inside? Should the can be completely full?

Does it have to do with engine/oil temp when removed?

upon first removal it should be full, tipping it to dump oil out there will still be 1/4 full or so depending on how long you leave it to drain.

When I removed the filter from my GF's matrix I let it completely drain before I cut it open. When I got it open, it was completely full between the filter media and the can, all the way up to the top. So full in fact, that when i had punctured it but not sliced the top all the way off, oil began to leak out with the filter sitting open end up. That means the anti-drainback valve was still good.

Depends on how the filter mounts.

Some mount sideways, and will eventually drain down. Some mount upside down, and drain almost completely

The OP's question was asked in a way which lacked any specification or condition.
A side mounted filter will drain its center tube as you unscrew it.
As stated any filter will drain down to just what the media can retain if left upside-down.

Depends on the filter design, some have a lot, and some have none

I did an ABDV test on the filter in this C&P thread. It was mounted horizontally on a Nissan 3.5L V6. The filter sat for a week with base down, and then I opened up the ADBV with Q-tips and let it drain ... it was basically full of oil.

It doesn't depend on filter orientation if the filter stays full of oil or not. If the ADBV seals 100%, it will keep oil in the filter no matter what the orientation, like I showed (link in a post above) in the test leaving a filter base down for a whole week.

My Fram XG2 seats upside down. It holds 14 oz of fluid when I install it new and filled with fresh oil. Even after draining the easy fluid out of it following an OCI, it probably still holds another few ounces of fluid.

Yes, as I already said about 7 posts back. If that valve is good, they don't drain in any orientation. I've tried, on filters I intended put back. (There are ways to get most of that old oil out without damaging the valve, though.)

Yep, all about the ADBV working, NOT the orientation.

The filter was mounted vertically (open end up) and it seems the ADBV was working just fine. I just wondered because this was my first ever used filter cut open and all the posts I saw from you guys cutting them open led me to believe there would only be a small amount of oil and debris int he can after you remove the media. Clearly, that's not how it works. Don't know how I didn't figure that out myself.
