Anybody ever scrapped an average sedan like a Camry or a Malibu? How much does the scrapyard usually pay for one with decent body panels but a dead engine?

I scrapped our RAV4 with a blown tranny 5 years ago and they gave us around $400 and towed it away. It's not like they inspected the car for dents or anything.

They may only give you the scrap weight per pound, and they may give some extra for aluminum alloy wheels. Also, get the # off the cat & that will also tell them how much they can expect to recover from that too.

I called a scrap yard that offers to come get it. When they found out it was a Honda, their interest suddenly shifted to the catalytic converter and if it still had it and if it was OEM. They didn't care about anything else at that point. They made an offer over the phone (around $350, as I recall) but repeated multiple times that the tow driver will make the final offer once he/she arrived. When the lady said it yet another time, I told her forget it. It seemed pretty clear that it was a bait-and-switch game.

May not have been bait and switch at all…

They may have been burned many times by callers who said it had the OEM cat, only to find out that it didn’t…

I agree. Does not sound like bait and switch at all, and it's not unreasonable to me that they want the driver to examine te vehicle before they pay. They have no idea how truthful or knowledgeable the caller is.

Then don't give an offer over the phone. We both know if they told me they'd offer from $100 up to $600, 9 out of 10 potential sellers know they'll low-ball the in-person offer at $100-150 and make up an excuse as to why it's on the low end.

It depends upon demand for parts. Call them all and go with the highest amount. The scrap value for any car is around ~$250. My local junk yard is pretty well ran, and they were transparent about a waitlist for parts on my jeep and paid me above scrap value. It was kind of funny because they offered to buy the doors even if I didn't sell them the entire vehicle.

Depends on demand and the wholesale price of scrap steel which can vary by market. I've seen as low as $98 per ton which I don't know how scrap yards make any money at that price. To a high of $450ish per ton which causes every to get junked. Call around to see what is offered. I'd bet you'd be offered more if you look around a few dealerships and see if any mechanics want a project vehicle. Be prepared for serious lowballing by junkyards if the engine doesn't work.

I have sold to scrapyards anywhere from 500-900 in central tx. Depends entirely on the vehicle.

Pull n pay charges $399 flat rate for any engine on their yard so if it's a bad engine. I wanted to pull a V10 from an Audi S6 that was straight a few years back. Those go from $1000-$5000 used.

The reason I’m asking is that I’m thinking of Frankensteining together a couple of cars and then selling the remains to recoup some of the cost.

We sold a heavily damaged GMC truck once.
Seems like we got in the 4-5k range.
Not sure there were any straight panels, the transmission was physically broken/cracked.
As far as I know the 4.3 was still good.

I do not remember the name of the company we sold it to.
We took a lot of pictures and emailed them in.
They gave us a price.

I do remember that the tow truck driver handed us a check when we handed him the title.
The check was from Copart.

First place I called to come get my 01 mercury sable wagon offered $280 for car. I told them engine runs but tranny was bad. They didn't ask about cats and didn't care about tranny said they planned to shred the car too old for parts is what they said.
