How much battery to run a 13,500lb winch?

I’m going to take my gooseneck in to have a mounting bracket welded on for a winch to be mounted. I have a storage box in the front I was planning on dropping a battery in and having a solar panel up top to keep it charged.

It’s not an expensive winch at all it’s basically there in the event I snap something on my Grenadier or UTV to pull it up on the trailer so limited use. But how much power will a couple pulls use on this? What specs in a battery am I needing?

no load is usually 50-75 amps on that size winch.

full load is closer to 400 amps. (doubt you would be near that)

Typically you leave engine running so the alternator can provide 100amps and dont winch continuously.

Pretty much any mid sized car battery will run that winch. An AGM somewhere around 40AH will produce plenty of motor starting amps for that beast. Really, it's the high inrush current (motor starting amps) that might convince you to use something larger than a high quality U1 tractor battery. But even that will work in a pinch. Especially considering your modest loads.

We used a similar winch to drag a difficult to move 3000 pound+++ aircraft up an incline and into our hangar. Was a Group 35 car battery. Not even a hiccup, even when the battery was 5+ years old.

This is on a gooseneck trailer. I picked that winch because it was cheap. It won’t get used much
 
You're not supplying 100 amps through a 7 pin trailer connector. Only if you run your own wire and some good Anderson connectors will you be able to supply that kind of current to a trailer battery.
Which is why I said typically
He needs an oversized battery because it won't be recharging in use.
 
Something to consider is a portable setup

I ran 2 guage (it's what I had laying around) from batt on my 250 to hi amp connector on rear of truck.
(and 250 amp fuse). Coiled up a bit and bungied to rear hitch. No need to worry about trailer batt setup.

Have very old 9K Warn on portable mount. Can store winch off trailer (in bed, since I have cap), so it does
not get beat up with weather or stolen, can be used on other trailers or even right off back of truck in a pinch.

I even made up another wire setup with same connector on one end, and 20 feet cable with ring terminals on other end.
It can be used on any rig with 2" rec tube and some kind of stud on battery terminals.

this is the correct way to do it. you can still put a battery on your gooseneck but it needs to be wired to the trucks electrical system. that winch will melt the battery down quickly at high loads without some alternator support. well done job to this poster.

Yep. Looks like it has 7.2HP - mine is 6.6HP and pulls a battery hard.
Even with a decent alternator on my Rubicon - had an unintended consequence. Did three heavy pulls - and then the system did not allow Stop/Start for a day … (I was devastated) 😷

Well my hope is to have enough battery to do 1 or 2 pulls with it to get something on the trailer then that's it. I'd let the solar panel recharge it the rest of the time.
