How many of you, fill your gas tank ALL THE WAY?

Hardly ever fill it up, unless I'm travelling to some area where it's much cheaper.

I can probably go 3 weeks on a full tank in the Honda ... the Volvo only does ~5.5K/yr so it doesn't need to visit the pump much either.

Seriously? You can burn your fuel pump by driving near empty? I gotta stop then.. and fill at 1/2 tank.

That's a myth. The pump is cooled by the fuel flowing THROUGH it, not the fuel surrounding it.

Personally, I always fill up my vehicles. I usually stop once a week, no matter what the gauge reads, and always record the mileage.

Gas prices jump around a lot here, going up $.25 one day and back down within a week. I try to fill up when I think prices are relatively low, and often will just buy enough for a few days if I think the price is at a peak. Went ahead and filled up yesterday at $2.46 mainly to check mileage. 9 gallons and 188 miles. First I checked my mileage in years in my old truck. Mixed driving, 2 lane, 4 lane, urban freeway plus using my truck as a mule to move a lift around cutting trees down at my daughter's place.

Big adventure, 2 huge, 3 foot in diameter silver maples, overhanging the house, wires, and street. I told them they needed to have a professional do it. Kids never listen. They rented a lift and his dad and I came with our chain saws.

i top off.... read 3 days ago that the average price for gas in the USA is $1.85.... i'd cream if i found gas under $2.40 around here... fresno right now is $2.60 and san diego is around $2.80... where in the heck is gas at $1.85? thats the AVERAGE, that means it could be like $1.40 somewhere

Last I read $2.50 was the average (as it is around here as well).

Technically, less gas = less weight = better mileage. With that, I fill 'er up all the way when it hits E and forget about it till next time.

$3.05 USG equivalent helps this along too.

I fill up every time. Why waste time?

My car gets filled every 6-8 days (about 1/4 tank left), my wife about every 3 weeks (between 1/4 and 1/2 a tank left). I let it click itself off once, wait about 30 seconds, and then fill till it clicks again (about 1/4 gallon).
My dad was/is one of those that will sit there for 5 minutes clicking and rocking the car to get every little drop in, even though I have told him it can be bad for both the pumps and the car.

Fill up everytime with a Shell gas card - 5% rebates

.

It would be much harder to track MPG w/o filling all the way up, also.

I agree 100% that you should just fill all the way to the top when you are getting gas.

I'm sure you guys have better things to do than go to the gas station every 2 days. Plus the extra weight of a full gas tank won't really hurt gas mileage.

With a FULL tank of gas , my 96 Vette will get 29 MPG on the highway in 6th gear. Low tire pressure, dirty fuel filter, old spark plugs will hurt gas mileage more than the extra weight of a full gas tank.

Yep, gas is expensive in California. 91 Octane was $2.99/gal for a few weeks and it dropped back to $2.89/gal today.

I drive 220 miles a day (split cost with co-worker). So I usually fill up once a day w/ tank @ 1/4th full.

I used to top off about a gallon more after the first shut off click but something broke (engine light came on) and required 4-5 hours of work @ dealership. GM mechanic said topping off breaks things - never do it again.

I'm wondering if my fuel pump broke or something. They put it under warranty work so that was nice 100% free.

Lesson: Never top off till it starts overflowing!

Origin,

You probably saturated the vapor canister with fuel by doing that. By law, the gas tank in your car cannot vent directly to the atmosphere. Instead, it vents through a charcoal canister into the intake manifold. If you top off your tank, you can cause fuel to flood that canister, which will cause a check engine light when the computer detects a problem when it tries to purge the fumes and gets liquid instead.

I just looked it up - a gallon of gas weighs about 6 pounds. I was figuring a few more than that. So filling up my *** Saturn only adds about 60lbs!

What do you think the Dealership replaced that took half a day?

My co-worker was saying the same thing - Instead of filling up every night @ 1/4th a tank, just run that 1/4th a tank to work one way (110 miles) and fill up at work. End up saving MPG by driving with almost an empty tank instead of a full tank. Wonder how much though?

Ever since I found out that the fuel pump gets pretty hot and that its life can be cut short by running on empty, I've been trying to keep the tank at least 1/3 full at all times. I used to be notorious for running my car on fumes.

When trying fit as much fuel into the tank, fill slowly until auto-shutoff occurs. Wait a few seconds and bounce the car a few times. This method eliminates trapped air and you ensure that all useable space is used. Usually a liter or two more fit in. Fill slowly until auto-shutoff occurs. Do not fill beyond this point, because you want to leave some room for fuel expansion.

If im not in NJ, I do my best to get back there before filling up... Prices are too drastically different to pay in another state for convenience.

I drive until Im less than 1/4, sometimes until the light comes on... Once in a while if I see a really great price, Ill buy just to fill up on cheap gas. I only buy at name brand stations, however.

When I fill up, I let it go on auto until it pops. I then squeeze about 3/4 on the lever, and let it fill until it pops again... Then I round to the next 5c.

Ive noticed that on some cars, my fiancee's acura in particular, stopping when the filler pops the first time leaves the tank a fair way over 3/4 but a fair way under full. For that type of car, I squeeze lightly, maybe 1/4, and let it go two pops. Once in a while this backfires (depending upon the flowrate of the pump, or the sensitivity of the filler, I guess), and it fills too close to the top at the second pop.

I'll acknowledge some myth surrounds the fuel cooling the fuel pump.
But driving around with an empty tank in high humidity climate also encourages condensation in tank.
