How long for Auto-RX to work?

Well, I did it... finally broke down and bought two bottles of Auto-RX. I have a '55 Studebaker with a '63 engine in it, it is actually in pretty good shape, runs well and holds good oil pressure, doesn't smoke much either, but I have two problems. First, the front main seal is bad. Bad as in I'm losing a quart of oil every 100 miles or so. Second, I'm getting a decent amount of blowby, enough that it fails the dollar bill test when significantly above idle (yes, it is a PCV engine.) I suspect one or more stuck rings, which is why I'm contemplating this treatment.

Should I put the Auto-RX in now, and hope that it stays in there long enough to do some good, or should I change the front main seal first? I'd rather do the Auto-RX first as I was hoping to do a cam swap at the same time as I have the timing cover off, but if it won't do any good in, say, 4-500 miles it will be money down the toilet. But I'd rather break in a new cam with otherwise clean oil, if possible.

I don't really expect the Auto-RX to fix the front seal leak, as it's a felt seal, not neoprene.

Any advice from those more familiar with this product and its uses would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

nate

Since you're leaking that much oil, I'd swap the main seal and cam and then run the Auto-Rx per instructions. It's gonna take the whole 3,500 miles (or 7,000 for 2nd treatment) to work. It won't adversely affect the break-in of the new cam.

That's what I was afraid the response would be

guess I have to wait for my new timing cover to arrive before I do anything (having one polished right now...) I've got some Rotella in it so I hope that that is at least loosening up some of the goo...

I would run the ARX now. In the case of cleaning up ring packs normally this is accomplished in 500 miles of driving. There is alot of heat and pressure surrounding the rings. This is where ARX will clean the fastest. Should also help clean up the top end some before your cam swap.

The rate of oil flow out of your front main seal would suggest that its toast, but who knows.

Kevinrea, I can say that about most "cleaning" oils and products but NOT ABOUT Auto-RX!

I evaluate lots of oils and additives in test on a proprietary basis.

Auto-RX and Lubecontrol are the only two you will ever see me recommend publicly(after 30 years of testing).

Auto-RX is cutting edge tribochemistry.

kevinrea Gee Kevin...I think you need to read a little bit more around this forum about ARX before you go pronouceing snakeoil on it1 ...put your flame proof suit on buddy ...people may jump ugly with you ..try this site www.rms13.com ..then pop off ..
as for the original poster ..if the engine is a 63'.....you may have more going on then a "stuck ring pck" ... it's callesd aworn out engine ...sometimes it does happen .....

Your oil consumption problem was/is mechanical I don't badger anyone you ran that post into the ground. Now along with this kevinrea you pop up again. This forum is for exchange of ideas, not
innuendo and "slams"

I ran nothing into the ground. I simply posted my results during the course of the ARX process. I believe I also said in several of my posts that my engine's oil consumption must be due to mechanical wear beyond the help of ARX, and yet you implied (several times I might add) that that my observations were pointless and that I wasn't using the product correctly. You might as well face the fact the ARX isn't going to work for everyone and that doesn't necessarily mean it's not a good product or that person's input isn't useful to anyone else. I posted no inuendos or slams, just my results.

Be prepared to be badgered by Frank if you claim ARX doesn't work. I used it in my car with no results and I followed the directions to the tee, yet when I post messages stating that ARX hasn't done anything to slow my oil consumption problem, Frank insinuates I didn't use the product correctly. The fact is it doesn't work in every situation and that doesn't necessarily mean it wasn't used properly.

bottgers,

I do agree, your oil consumption problem was not stopped by the use of Auto-Rx. And as you stated, it is a mechanical problem and only a mechanical repair will cure the problem. Also after 2 cleaning and rinse cycles, you should have a clean engine. Probably best stated: Auto-Rx did not stop my oil leak consumption on my engine that has a mechanical problem.

But this thread is so far off topic I am going to close it.
