I know, I asked this at the boat forum, but need some more input. If my engine has maybe 10 to 20 hours on it, can I get by with replacing the oil and let the filter stay on if the engine sits for two years? AC Delco and Pennz. LL 15w40. Stored inside, no HVAC system though. SW Oklahoma climate.

My 2000 Honda Civic Si says to change the oil every 7,500 miles but change the filter every 15,000 miles. Based on this, what you are saying makes sense.

Well whats more important, the boat or saving a $ on the oil filter?

To me not changing the filter is like taking a shower and putting on your dirty underwear. I would change a filter before I would change the oil.

Is this a Mercury Marine GM engine 5.0L?

No, it's the econo-special 3.0LX 4 banger, iron block and heads special. I hear what your saying and it's not so much being cheap or anything, I just don't want to waste a good oil filter if I don't have to. I mean, the oil in it now is still clean so I had wondered if the filter would even be dirty.

Two conditions end the life of a filter--plugging the media with solid material and cooking the resiliency out of the elastomer material by many hours of heat.

Your filter on the boat engine won't have either of these conditions. I'd change the oil and filter yearly just to be sure there's no significant moisture in the oil, and that the small amount of moisture always in that oil hasn't begun a process of hydrolysis of the oil...decomposing it due to contact with the water.

well the thing is, when some of us ask how long an oil filter can be used, we're not asking about how many times we can change the oil w/o changing the filter.

M1 is good for 9k-10k miles or more.

If my oil filter has to be changed every 3k, that means I have to buy 3 oil filters + 3 quarts of oil during each 10k interval.

However, if the filter could be stretched to 10k miles, I'd need only 1 oil filter and the standard 5 qt for each 10k interval. I have no intention of changing the oil and keeping the old filter on there.
