Craftsman push mower. What I did is open up that plastic flap that goes between the deck and the bag and stuck my tape measure in there. With the mower on it's highest setting, I measured 3-3/4 inches from the tip of the blade to the concrete patio. Is that how you do it ?

That sounds like the correct way to measure it. The distance is a measure of the length of the blade of grass above the soil after it is cut. Due to variations in the level of the ground, the mower will undulate and cause some variations in the level of the cut so it is an approximation.
put a straight edge across the front left and rear right tires and measure down with the tape to the cutting edge of the blade. or get a plastic cutting height gauge. I use those two methods.

I just use a tape measure under that plastic discharge flap while the mower is sitting on a concrete driveway.
I also disconnect the spark plug before putting my hands into the blade path.
My 10 year old Craftsman runs nicely.

Thats basically how i do it. I measure with the blades on each side turned front to back 12:00 and 6:00. I like to set the deck so the rear of the blade about 1/8 to 1/4 inch higher than the front.

^^ That's how I've always done it. Cut grass. Adjust as necessary.. Repeat.

Well, there's no penalty if you make a mistake by being too high, so it's not like you only get 1 shot at it.
So you just start overly higher, then lower it down if you need it lower.
The other people are right, because the way the wheels sit on the grass/dirt will screw up any measurements that you're trying to make on flat ground.

With the mower parked on level concrete, I just slide a chunk of 2x4 under the deck and eyeball the blade clearance side-to-side, then front-to-back.
