I drain mine and recycle them.

In Washington state you can recycle them. When I was in Oregon I went the the recycle station and was told drain them and throw them in the garbage.
At the local Wal-Mart when I get out there and the TLE is open. AKA never. Most of the time it ends up drained and in the trash.
AutoZone will accept used filters when you drop off your spent oil for recycling.

Are you sure they didn't require you to pay for the services of a certified used oil filter disposal technician?

Didn't AutoZone get in troble a while back for dumping used oil into the sewer ?
I take mine to WM TLE at night and throw it into their bins.
When I took my used oil to Walmart the lady behind the counter very politely informed me that they also take oil filters.
I normally throw them into the trash but I might start bringing it to Walmart. Does anybody know if they do anything different to them than throw them in the trash?

I have been told by 3 places here that they recycle the oil, but they trash the filters. Just drain them and throw them away.
However, back in 1998-2000 when I worked in a shop they had guys come by every 2 weeks and pick up 50 gallon drums filled with used filters.
I think at one point you could make money off of recycling alot of stuff. Now that the market has dropped off alot is going into landfills.
For instance, I read an article that you could sell a huge bale of crushed cardboard (1000 lbs?) to China for $200 about a year ago. Now the price is around $5 for the same amount. I imagine the scrap metal industry has gone the same way.
Since storing it is expensive, it all ends up in landfills.

I take them to Palo Alto Recycling center.
Dump oil, batteries (auto/household/rechargable), filters, antifreeze, paper, florescent bulbs, cardboard, bottles/cans, styrofoam, metal, wiring, motors, appliances...
I just store everything and go when I get lots of used oil.

Until recently, threw them in the trash. Now, tap the base with and nail, drain, and take to the local recycling center. Guy that works there says they are now not supposed to be thrown in the regular garbage, though I expect many still are.
Also got a new oil can cutter, so I also cut some open before taking to center.

My region accepts them for recycling at the local hazardous waste depots.
Even if your town says to throw them in the trash, you should consider recycling used filters.

Toss mine in the filter recycling container when I drop the used oil off at the parts store.
I take my used oil to Jiffy Lube and I bring the used oil filter in a plastic bag there too...They crush it down and they have a bin full of used crushed oil filters. If I ever get lazy or don't feel like changing my oil they will do the work with my own oil and filter for ten dollars.
Luckily we have curbside recycling for used oil and used oil filters in our county.
