how do they tell if a tire has been mounted?

I'm thinking about returning some mower tires that I mounted on the rim, but ever used. IE never drove with them on. They were literally installed for a day and I had them taken off. So other than all the grease they used on the bead I don't really see them looking any different.

They might look for the molding nipples on the tread. At least it wasn't driven.

You can be firm with them and say you don't know WT? they're talking about and you'll be charging back your credit card.

Honestly the only thing I noticed was the inside of the tire was slightly brown compared to the sidewall part of it. For all I know it was like that before.

How lenient/generous/accommodating they are is part of a policy which is already established.

What was wrong with these tires? Be specific in answering.

Then determine if the effort/expense/risk is worth whatever course of action you'd take afterwards.

My thoughts:
A) Don't know your situation.
B) What's the big deal? Lawn tractor tires??? Did the machine blow up? Are you selling it and the prospective buyer wants one with bad tires????? Kira

Are lawn mower tires really so expensive that you would sacrifice your integrity by lying to return them? And yes, failing to disclose that you mounted them is lying.

To the OPs credit or discredit what is the store policy? If it's vague, they could be hoping that the customer would be afraid of shipping only to get the runaround, and the OP is preparing himself for said runaround.

I almost got hosed by walmart. Bought some jeans there, tried them on, they fit. Bought the same exact thing a week later without trying on, they didn't fit. I wore them for an hour hoping they'd stretch in. Tried returning them, they said they were dirty, they weren't. They said wash them, so I did. They said they couldn't take them back, they were washed. TL;DR, they took them back after a fuss.

To answer the OP's question, yes, you can tell a tire has been mounted and there is no way to completely remove the evidence.

Well, now there is almost 500 people that know they have been mounted. Good luck trying to remove them without damage. Would you want to buy them again?
