They were good hot dogs. I used to occasionally eat at one some place south of Market in the 1960s. Some of the local mom and pop places had them beat with their Polish sausages and hot links.
If you knew what when into a haggis you'd probably avoid it.
I know what goes in one, most Americans are too squeamish.
So are most Scottish. But they love the deep fried Mars Bar.
The best hot dogs I have had are from Usingers in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Here in Arkansas I haven't found a real good one. When we visited Wisconsin I would always fill the freezer with meat, sausages and other things from Usingers. The hot dogs were good with any toppings you liked. HR

Buy dogs that don't contain sodium nitrite additives! Google for example "Fearless Franks." I see at least 4 brands of sodium nitrate additive free dogs locally. Usually they use celery juice (which naturally contains nitrites in small amounts) instead.

Where have you been for the past few decades? The sodium nitrite controversy has been at least during my lifetime a constant issue.
A chemical reaction in an acidic environment such as the human stomach favors the formation of carcinogenic N-nitrosamines. Foods that contain nitrites also produce potentially harmful quantities of N-nitrosamines if they sit for a prolonged time after having been cooked. This applies also to foods (like celery root) that natually contains nitrite. For decades, cured meat consumption and stomach and intestinal cancer have been linked. According to the Fool and Dope Administration the use of cheap nitrite as a (unnecessary, since less questionable alternatives exist) food additive is just peachy.
Google the issue and believe what you want.
