Honda Type 2 Coolant Only in Honda Vehicles?

I look at it this way....You change your coolant around 75000 miles or so....Why take a chance.. I always use OEM Honda coolant...Its not like you are changing it every 5000 miles....I put it in and dont have to worry about if it is OK or not....

Honda owner's manual states Honda Long Life Coolant Type 2.

Some people state to use Honda brand coolant ONLY in Honda cooling systems.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks
There is also Peak you can use. I have a stash of these when Walmart had them on clearance for $3/gal.

You usually replace them when you do the timing belt, which is usually a 100kish mile thing.

You could let it ride, but you'd have to do all the work twice if it needed replaced later.
But water pumps in Hondas really don’t fail very often. I had 254,000 km on my last Civic and now have 301,000 km on my current one and have never needed a new water pump. And since both of these cars use timing chains I never had the worry of changing a timing belt either.

He's got a J-Series, which is a belt engine. Standard procedure is that you replace the WP while you're in there every 100-1xx'ish k miles.

You can certainly not replace it if you choose, you're right, they don't go bad often, but if they do, you've got to do all the same work over again.

How much is a water pump though? If it’s $50 or even $100 that’s one thing but if it’s way more, forget about it until it’s bad.

Depends on how you buy it, Most people buy the AISIN kit and it is included. The whole kit is around $200. An OEM pump by itself is around $180.

If you're doing the work yourself and have done them before it is a couple hour job if you're not doing anything else other than those components.

If you're paying someone you're usually $1000+.

So that's typically why you replace them. You don't want to have to pay $1000 twice.

Me? I do my own work and I still replace them. I want to be done with the job and not have to think about it. Although, with today's parts quality there's a big YMMV in there somewhere.
