honda trx300 advice please

good evening fellas. for all of you trx300 fourtrax gurus i need some help. i have a cherry honda trx300 atv that i bought from my cousin. he got it after his dad,my uncle,passed away. it sat for approx. 2 years before i got it. so, i get a carb kit and rebuild that change all fluids. there is absolutely no reason that this machine shouldn't run smooth and like a top but for some reason i can't get it to run to my satisfaction. it runs a little rough for me and as all i have ever had have been honda's i am used to smooth engines. i decided to check out the air filter even though it looked good at a glance. after i took it apart the inner liner had deteriorated and fell apart with most of it sticking to the inner core of the air filter. if that is clogged would that make it run rough? is there any way to clean that inner core? if so how please?this bike hasn't had more than 3 tanks of gas run through it for what it is worth.

Don't know how to tell you to clean it, but that could sure be your problem.

For starters, get a new air filter and clean up any filter gunk that is in the TB or filter box.

i put a new air filter on just not the inner core filter. i went to the honda shop and asked for a new air filter and that is what they handed me. the tb and filter box are sptoless too. i wonder can i take compressed air and try to blow out some of the 14 yr old filter out of it that was sucked into the inner core? if the inner core filter if clogged pretty good would it make the machine idle pretty roughly?
