I had my Accords transmission replaced at 100K 2 years ago. I had the work done at the Honda dealer as I didn't want to have it rebuilt. When I had it replaced I was told that it was a Honda remanufactured transmission, they said that it was basically a used shell, with ALL new parts. I had no reason to believe otherwise, but I was just reading on another forum that Honda has independents do rebuilds on used transmissions then the dealer installs them and gives you the 3 year 36K miles warranty. Can anybody confirm this one way or another? Are these rebuilt transmissions are are they truly all new Honda factory parts put together by Honda themselves. New trans has 25K on it and so far has been doing well. I do a single drain and fill (3 quarts) every 10K / 1 year with Honda DW-1.

Transmission rebuild is not from honda. The rebuilt transmission is from independents, most likely reputable independent transmission shop. Most dealers do the same. Dealers can't afford having techs spending hours to repair or rebuild a transmission. They lose money. The dealer is about getting the car in and out as fast as possible.

Shop around. There are some transmission rebuilders that also rebuild using upgraded parts, if available.

I spoke with a service manager a few years ago at Honda. He told me that customer paid transmissions won't be from Honda as they are very expensive. He told me that they get the remanufactured transmissions from Howard Engineering. I remembered the name but have never looked them up.

At one point I recall that Howard Engineering was a
American Honda Motor Co. authorized/certified vendor for remans? I wonder if that was or still is true?

I believe that was true. But I suspect that there is more than one vendor, because Howard is just one small shop in CA - so I don't think they're supplying ALL of the reman units for Honda.

If you don't mind me asking, what happened with the old one? I always thought the transmissions mated to the 2.4 were pretty solid and that it was the V6 transmissions that had issues. I've been wanting to get an Accord of that vintage for a while now, but I've been steering towards the 4-cylinder because of the transmission issues.

It was having shift flares in 5th gear. Also Hondas shift down automatically when slowing down from 5th, to 4th, 3rd, 2nd then 1st. When it shifted form 2nd to 1st which it does at 5MPH when slowing down it would lurch forward, very violently at times. But dont let that steer you away form one of these. Even the V6 have shown to be pretty reliable in the 7.5 gen (2006-2007). I believe mine had issues due to lack of fluid changes. When I was at a local car wash one day, someone was eyeing my car and eventually walked over. Turns out it was the PO. He said that he did one fluid change in 100K, and who knows if it was the OEM Honda fluid. If you can find a well maintained one I say go for it. They are great cars.

Get the 4 cyl engine. Convert the transmission to DW-1 synthetic fluid and use a Magnafine inline filter on the return. Enjoy! The v-6 engines are thursty.

Yep, the J30 V6 is a rocket, but not necessary. The K24 is more than adequate.

I know at my Grandpas Garage he does not do any of his Transmission work nor does he do any Exhaust / Muffler work.. He has he cars that need trans work put on flatbed and taken to a trans place and YES they have dealer cars there also.....

Also For exhaust he takes them to a place that specializes in exhaust and both the trans place and the exhaust place give him a discount price then he can make $ on the customer.
If there is ever a problem the customer bring the car to him and he takes the car back to the trans shop... However that has only happened a few times in 20 years.

So yes I belive it... I have seen it.. I have seen a FORD Dealer with a FLAT BED picking up 3 vehicles and taking them back to the dealer....

I was shocked when I saw that.. I even talked to the manager and he said many places do that b/c its cost effective. We specialize in Transmission, we do transmission all day 24/7 so they will get a better job here then at the Dealer or at your Granpas Garage.

It sounds right to me... But you would think the dealer would give them a dealer rebuld from the factory or something.
