Honda oil filter defect

Well, I am scared away from Honda oil filters as of now.
Just playing devil's advocate, what happens if someone posts (1) example of a bad Napa filter ? You switch to something else and there's examples for that brand too. People post good Honda filter examples weekly or monthly here but those are just thrown out as flukes ?

Fram makes 1 million filters for Honda alone, not to mention how many 7317 variants they make for their own brand and more for other brands. I'm not defending Fram either - this applies to any company. Not singling you out either. Of our 3 cars, I can only tell you what filter is on one of them at the moment. Wife's Toyota has a Toyota filter. My Infiniti may have a Honda filter or it could be a PG filter and the same with our Civic.

For me it’s safe to say stay away from First Brands until the bankruptcy settles. Nothing will improve before then. We can hope it will after.

I'm still using the Honda A02. Not because I think it's a superior filter but because everything else is such a crapshoot these days and I have a genuine Honda filter wrench that fits them so well. On my 5th Honda now.
The genuine honda filter wrench fits PGI filters just as well. Likewise for Pentius.
There's no reason to use an A02 these days.

There's no "feelings" about this, it's 100% accurate (except for the S2000 at some point). 20+ years ago, they were standardized on (using Fram #) 3593 and moved to the 7317 equivalent. Dealers probably order/receive oil filters by the pallet because of this standardization.
Exactly. Before all Hondas used the M1-110 (7317) it was the M1-104 (3593).

The only exceptions are the aforementioned S2000 and the even rarer NSX filters which have an M22 spud not shared with any other Honda car that I've seen.

Unsure if the actual specs are the same but it's basically a Fram Extra Guard, which I think they label filtration like 95% @ whatever, so yes, it is way more efficient.
Unless something has changed, the Honda A02 ISO 4548-12 efficiency was 66% @ 20u. Not very good.

The point of my post was Fram making Honda oil filters. If Napa Gold filters start being made by Fram, I am done with Napa Gold. You can tell me forever how great Fram filters are, I will NOT use them.

Unless they made it like the OG Ultra. NAPA Golds are currently PGI made, but were made by Mann-Hummel before that. Think NAPA got tired of the decrease in quality from Mann-Hummel.

Times change. The OG Ultra with wire backing was probably the best filter ever made for the price. Fortunately, there are helpful lunatics on this forum that document the ongoing changes with oil filters in ways that no one else anywhere would. And they have my gratitude.

I have Autozone nearby. Is a STP XL what I'm looking for?
In my area the STP XL are made in China by PG. Some folks have reported that the STP XL in their area are made by Champ Labs. The best way to tell the difference is to look to see where they are made and also if they have holes or louvers. The PG made ones will have holes.

Put on a Napa gold, and ESP 0w20
That is some clean looking oil for 6 mos service. My filter take off would look like that after 2 days, maybe.

One benefit here is the P-gasket. Those have never weeped or stuck in service, whereas many flat gaskets weep or stuck.

Agree you don't want windows in the filter, but you have a dome end bypass that periodically opens and flushes accumulated debris into the engine. Not defending poor quality, but just think about that. - Arco

I also was surprised at how clean the filter element looked, barely discolored at all. The oil was darker, but not black.
Must be burning clean for a DI engine, inside tailpipe looks clean, and no gas smell in oil, or rising level, almost down to add mark before the change.

Hopefully it was just a rare defect and not widespread. I forgot to put the leaf spring in the pict. but it looked good.
