My wife and I are looking at 2005 Honda Odyessy. Anything in particular I should watch out for? It has around 40K miles.

If I remember correctly, that was the first model year of that generation. The power sliding doors had some issues with a friend of mine. That same friend t-boned someone at 51MPH (CHP said impact speed was 45MPH - he barely had time to react to the person turning left in front of him). The Odyssey was totaled. The car he hit was totaled and they were severely injured. Another car that got hit after the two collided and careened over a lane was also totaled. My friend in the odyssey walked away with only a burn from the airbag(s) and he was a little sore afterwards. I know it is anecdotal, but it was part of the reason I bought one a year later.

Check out odyclub.com for more info.

ds,

We have an 05 EX with 46K miles.

Our tires where gone at 43k so they where replaced, I would watch for that ... I would make sure that if the tires where replaced that they actually put the correct size back on as replacements. Size is hard to find 235 65 16 .

Our van has been great ... on an oil related FYI and for what this may be worth ... our van has never yet turned the oil black ... I run PP. Only ever a honey shade to darker brown ... never black.

Tail pipe is clean and soot free.

Only thing replaced other than tires was the battery .... three cells completely dry on the original, I should have kept a better eye on it, but it was only two years old... one morning the van did not start .. 9 volts on the multi-meter ... with the dry cells, I just opted to replace the battery ... that as a month or so ago.

Good luck.

Yes, the transmission has changed since the 2nd gen Odyssey. I don't know if it is any better, but they did make changes to it in the 3rd generation.

Do you know which transmission models and serial numbers you are referring to?

I do.

I hope Honda never tries to get as big as Toyota so that gentlemen like yourself actually do not buy a Honda.

Please do never go near their autos.

Laminar Lou,

We drive the van for essentially the same reasons, it is the only vehicle we use with my 4 year old son.

The 05 is only 50lbs. shy of 3 tons. Loaded two people and a child, more than 3 tons .... one whole ton heavier than our other vehicle.

Many people do not realize how big and heavy the van actually is ... this can be good for reasons as you mention .. a little bad when it comes to gas.

rpn453,

Where do you get that number from?

Stamped on my van as well as in the Helm Inc. service manual is the number for GVWR of 5952 lbs.

The weight listed for Canada is 2700 kg btw.

Good post. Amazing how people vaporize when you ask for proof about a statement like "don't go near their transmissions". Makes me laugh.

A gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is the maximum allowable total weight of a road vehicle or trailer that is loaded, including the weight of the vehicle itself plus fuel, passengers, cargo, and trailer tongue weight.

GVWR is different than curb weight (actual vehicle weight).
