I have a 2003 Honda 5 speed manual transmission which had the Honda MTF type 1 as the original fill. I ran it for 15K miles and changed it with Honda MTF type 2. The transmission was smoother with the type 2, lower viscosity fluid. I changed it again at 30K and, this month at 45k with type 2 fluid. I have no problems with shifting. It performs well in winter temperatures.

I have seen some analysis of Honda type 1 fluid that would suggest that it sheers 2 units per 10K miles. I have not seen any analysis of type 2 fluid. Does anyone know if Honda type 2 fluid sheers like their previous fluid? I am considering changing over to Redline or Amsoil on the next change, if their fluids do not sheer as quickly and run 30K miles.

Honda's new fluids are supposed to be pretty good.
All transmissions shear fluid. They cut and grind away, unlike an engine.
A full synthetic is best, and a lighter weight lube won't shear as much as a heavier fluid, because it already is 'there'.
