Honda filter sizes

For the Honda guys out there....

For aftermarket oil filters I've noticed that Hondas prior to 2002 take a different filter number then Hondas after 2002.

e.g. WIX Part number for 1994 is 51334 vs. 57356 for 2008 Accord

Honda OEM part numbers have stayed the same 15400-PLM-A01/2 are recommended for both.

Why do the aftermarket filter manufacturers have two parts vs Honda OEM one?

Falken - thanks for pointing out the thread.

I might stick with the HONDA OEM PLM-A01. It will fit multiple year Honda cars rather than buy seperate filters for each model year.
