My wifes 2005 CRV now has about 20K miles and up until this point she has been doing 3K intervals with dino oil at the local quickie oil change mart. I'm going to start changing it myself and looking for recommendations. The car is short tripped about 80% of the time and she is putting on approx. 10K miles a year.

My goal is to do changes every 6 months. Any recommendations? Oh, it is recommended to use 5W-20.

Thanks.

You could start with Amsoil 0W-20 and do a UOA at 6 months. If everything looks good, go to a one year OCI. I would also use an Amsoil EAO13 oil filter if you go this route.

You could also go with Pennzoil Platinum and 6 month OCI's. I would still do a UOA on the first run. I would also recommend using the Amsoil EAO13 oil filter. Wix and K&N also make good oil filters.

I have a 2001 CR-V and used the following:
Mobil 7500
Castrol Syntec Blend
Dura Blend
and will be using Schaeffers blend.
91K on the CR-VC 4 month OCI regardless of miles. Most miles in 1 year 9K since I owned it. Bought it with 60K 4 years ago.

How do Honda's filters rate? I was planning on using those but I would consider others.

As for the oil weight, I want to stick with whatever Honda allows just for powertrain warranty purposes. I know they spec 5W-20 but they also might list heavier weights for summer, I don't know.

Autozone just had a sale expire on the Syntec Blend, I knew I should have purchased some of that. Well, she has a few thousand left before the next chance so maybe I will catch something else on sale.

ive used all sorts of oils in my crv, from 5w30 to straight 40 and everything inbetween. seems like the honda engine doesnt care what it takes, atleast for a warm florida climate anyways.
i did 1 uoa with a straight 40 because i overheated the motor when a radiator hose blew. i thought i had a headgasket leak and wanted to see if there was coolant in the oil. the 40 has sheared to a 30 but the wear numbers looked good.
no coolant in the oil, btw.

Honda has great filters, but I don't care for the A02 (Honeywell) filters. I like their Toyo Roki/Filtech filters, and their JDM Hamp (Also Toyo Roki) filters.

My sisters 2004 CRV (purchased new) has has 7500 OCI's on Amsoil 5w30 for 3 years now with no issues. A Honda filter has always been used, but I have no idea what type...prob. the Honeywell (Fram?) ones. No issues at all with it at 40000 miles now.

They live in northern CA, and have made a few cross country trips with it.

If you do not want the expense of Amsoil, assuming you will still do frequent OCI's, I have heard that PP and Maxlife are great oils from these guys and countless posts! I have a stash just in case...

Honda chooses Mobil to supply the oil for their Honda motor oil program that dealers have the option of utilizing. Maybe something else to chew on...

I'm done with Mobil synthetic. It could be nothing but regardless I have lost interest.

I think I might go with PP on 6 month intervals using Honda filters. Who usually puts the PP up on sale for BOGO and the 2 for deals?

I just checked the new Autozone flyer, they have GTX for $8.29 a gallon. How does Castrol GTX conventional sound for 5K miles and 6 month intervals?

That's what I use carb850. I have used it all and have come back to Castrol GTX 5w-20 with Honda OEM filters. My last run with Amsoil 5w-20XL produced noisy results. GTX quiets the engine down in my opinion. I can go off the "noise decision factor" because all of the 5w-20 oils seem to protect the same with shorter OCI's. BTW, I have a 2002 CRV with 42K. I also do about 80% light city driving.

Our 02 2.3L accord and 99 2.0L crv have always had the oem 7500 mile OCI. The crv gets dino, accord syn. Zero problems, zero buildup, both near 80-90,000 miles.

With 5-20, the accord really drove/sounded well with M1 syn and syntec. The exxon superflow 5/20 (honda oem supplier I believe) was NOT a good choice by ear. Lot's o valve noise (Honda's are "tappy" anyway as it is). The M1 actually didn't sound/run different after changes, while the syntec has gotten noisier over time and gets quiter post-change. Maybe the M1 holds up longer in this motor?

CRV has always had 5/30 gtx, except the last change- syntec 5/30. WOW. smoother under power, snappier revs.

Castrol GTX conventional for 5K miles and 6 month intervals is fine, I'd be comfy with 7500 miles/6 mo in this car too.

I have been running Amsoil XL 5w20 in our Odyssey van since about 5k. It has about 35k on it now and I have always seen very good UOAs with it. I am running a 5-6k OCI on it. Based on the overall wear numbers, I will stick with it in this vehicle. My other Hondas have given better wear numbers with Havoline and Amsoil than with M1 for some reason. I guess given the UOAs, I might be off M1 for the time being.

But given your suggested OCI's, I would suspect any API certified 5w20 would do the trick.

One other thing, I have always used Honda OEM filters, but only the Filtech ones, not the Honeywell/Fram filters. If the Filtech were not available, I tend to like the Wix filters or Napa Gold.

Honda engines are generallly easy on motor oil but many do have fuel dilution problems especially in your short trip severe service useage...run a UOA

with short trip severe service, use one of the on sale top line 5w20 mineral oils and do OCI's with filter every 3k>5k miles based upon UOA.
Havoline, Chevron Supreme, TropArtic. all less than $2 a quart on sale.
Fram or Wix filters with quality silicone ADBV because of the horizontal high mounted filter.
