In my In Laws 2004 Accord 2.4L 4 cyl I want to do a coolant drain and refill before winter sets in.It is definitly GREEN in color. It has to be the ORIGINAL coolant in the car, [censored] they didn't even change the oil for almost 4 years.Anyway when I went to go get a gallon of Honda Coolant, the parts dept said it's supposed to be BLUE and has been BLUE since 1999??? Anybody have any answers on this.??

My 2002 Honda Civic has green coolant in it but my 2005 CR-v and 2008 Ridgeline came with blue. From what i've heard they switched to the new type 2 coolant in 1999, but it wasn't actually dyed blue until later, but it's the same stuff.

Yep green is from the factory, the Honda blue is correct from the parts dept when sticking with Honda fluid.

The coolant on the 04 Accord are good for 10 years.....AFter that flush and use blue coolant type 2 every 5 years...

THANKS jmac...I was also just told this by TWO seperate Honda service techs, I called around, just to make sure. The only thing I am wondering is , if it is the same stuff, and only the color is different.

I think it is, one way for Honda techs to tell if the coolant has ever been changed since leaving the factory.

One strange thing is that in the owners manual it says the oem green coolant is good for 10 years or 120,000 miles...now the new blue says 5 years or 60,000. What's up with that?

In the owners manual it will say to replace at 120,000 miles and then every 50,000 after that, the reason they put it on the jug is because if you're buying the gallon jugs you're probably at the point of going every 50,000.

Actually I believe many auto manufacturers (eg. Nissan) are this way. FF goes longer than subsequent drain and refills. Might have to do with getting all of the old out on subsequent maintenance. Or, it could be the difference in the compositon (purity) of the make up/fill water. Or, a combination of both.

I wouldn't trust that number.

Dex-cool was supposed to be good for 5 years, yet most of the time it is putrid by the 4th year.

I ran the OE Honda coolant on an 01 Civic EX, ~110k, ~7 years. Manual says 120k/10yrs. But, I had the timing belt and water pump service, so that's when the Honda coolant got drained, and new honda 50/50 coolant put in. Seems to make sense.

Type II has been around since at least 2001 according to the owner's manual for my parents' 2001 TL. Type II from the bottle is definitely blue; can't tell what color the TL's coolant was originally and don't recall the factory fill color on wife's '06 CR-V.
