Honda 0W20 oil

I recently bought a 2012 Honda Fit with 30K miles on it from a dealership about 75 miles away. Part of the deal was 5 free oil changes. Since i lived so far away i asked to take 5 oil filters and 20 quarts of oil with me. They declined the offer...stating that their oil is all in 250gallon drums..and no way could they do that for me.

I have all the service records for the car since day 1. The previous owner got their oil changed every 6K miles.. so it has had 5 oil changes at this dealership.

The invoices read.. Honda 0w20 oil change/ 15400-PLM-A01 filter included $24.99 .20hrs labor $11. (they also must provide coupons because the previous owner submitted $8 coupons with each oil change)

That makes a Honda 0W20 oil change with Honda A01 filter for $27.99

I am guessing that they are lying about the honda 0W20 oil...or are losing money with oil changes?

I was suspicious when they didnt honor my bottles and filter carryout deal, since this is a true honda dealership they would have those parts available.

I wonder if the previous owner was getting cheapest bulk 5w30? or is there a chance that they could do Honda 0W20 oil changes for that price?
 
Their cost is going to be low, so yes they could do oil changes with Honda syn at that price. No shop makes a whole lot of money on oil changes. I know my local Honda dealer uses Pennzoil Platinum and a Honda Genuine filter. Right now that retails at $40 but they have had specials where they drop the price to $26.
 
Water under the bridge is it not? So what if they used 5w30? Didn't hurt a thing if they did. Take the tinfoil hat off. That don't have to honor your requests.
 
I just took my daughter's 2015 Honda to the local Honda dealer in Virginia for oil and filter change plus tire rotation.They use Honda 0w-20 and Honda filter. Cost was $59, but the tire rotation was $16, so about $43 for the O&F service.
That is actually much cheaper that what the Subaru Dealer wants to change oil and filter. But, they cannot get the Subaru oil in bulk like Honda can for Honda oil.

Tinfoil hat is fitting nicely.

The water isnt under the bridge yet. I can still go there for the free oil changes.

According to Honda the 2011+ Fit is spec'd for 0w20...per the image below. and I am still under warranty.

It's water under the bridge because you can not undo what has already been done. If they've been using 5w30, it must work.

You said the dealership is far away but you will got there for a free oil change, most likely using a 5W-20 or possibly even a 30-grade which the thought of stresses you out? Doesn't make sense to me. Unless you know exactly what is in their tank and watch them put it in, you'll never know what's in your engine. Honda can spec whatever they want and all the charts you post won't change a thing.

I'd bet that the dealer pays well under five bucks a quart for HGMO 0W-20 in bulk.
The filter used is pretty inexpensive online at retail and the tech doing the work is paid based on book time, although twelve minutes seems pretty quick for an oil change.
What I'm trying to say is that the dealership wouldn't have lost money doing exactly what it says it did, although the service department didn't make a killing either and oil changes were probably considered a punishment assignment for the techs.
 
My son is getting his '13 Civic oil changed along with a tire rotation this week.
Oil change special coupon $24.99 and the oil is said to be Honda synthetic blend 0w20.

Those free oil changes are in hoping you get other work done when you're getting those free changes.
Dealerships stay open because of the service dept.That's where the big money is made.

Then it makes sense. I can come close to that ordering online for syn blend. Thanks for that info.
 
I'm surprised your dealer actually uses HGMO (assuming they're not lying). I have yet to find one in my area that does.

When I took my 2013 Pilot in for it's first free OCI & tire rotation, the dealer said they used bulk OW20 syn. When he struggled to find out the name of it, I knew I wouldn't be keeping that stuff in my car too long.

Part of these oil change deals is that they get you back to the dealer service department and that gives them another shot at getting more service work out of you and with an extreme problem a shot at selling you a replacement car.

That's probably the real reason the service department would not give you the quart bottles and filter.

I agree.

My daughter 2014 Accord has 2 years free oil change, she drives about 18-20k miles a year and OLM went down to 15% at around 7-8k miles. She went to dealer for free oil change and they tried to sell more services such as 15k maintenance that comprises mostly visual inspection and top off fluids for $139. I told her to decline any service other than oil change. If there is some scheduled maintenance required such as air and cabin filters I will do it with OEM parts rather than let dealer do it.
