Is anybody knowledgeable about on-road titling of surplus HMMWV's? I have always wanted to pick one up as a project vehicle and recently saw one semi-locally which would have been 99% of where I want it. Unfortunately it had a Michigan off-road title and from everything I have seen getting this titled as on-road vehicles is the exception not the rule, and even more difficult (or impossible) in some states, such as mine (Michigan).

You may have an easier time if you "move in" with it from your former residence/ summer house.

Florida has a rep for being pretty easygoing.

I read into this last year for myself. Seems that it is EXTREMELY hit-or-miss, multiple articles written about it online where people have been able to get it titled if they personally knew someone in the local DMV. After spending too much time on researching it with diminishing promised, I decided to pass on it. Way too much risk financially and time-wise to take a gamble on it.

Register it as a Hummer?

Noody's going to cut you off or give you the bird with a .50 cal mount on the roof..?

A gun mount never hurt anybody eh?

Having been forced to limp HMMVWs all over for 6 years, I'd only want one as a recreational vehicle, and only after it has gotten an LQ9 and a built transmission.

You would need a VIN that "works". Odds are decent it doesn't come with those manufacturer badges that say they meet all emissions and anti-theft measures for the model year.

They may very well come with a "serial number" that looks legit to the untrained eye, but one digit will be off, meaning "off road only".

If "they" allowed formerly off-road vehicles to become titled on-road it could mix up that years' CAFE numbers etc and someone would be in trouble.

Same thing with those Dodge Vipers donated to trade schools. The manufacturer wrote them off as charity and was allowed to make replacements and stay within various quotas.

Not saying it's right or wrong but what OPs scenario could devolve into.

Nobody's gonna cut you off because it's going to be broken down in the driveway*

I just would not purchase one. I don't know why you could not register it as a Hummer. Then again I would not bother purchasing and working on a HMMWV.
