Hitch Adapters (2" to 1.25")

I am trying to decide between your 2" and 1.25" hitch model for my Prius. The bike racks I plan to use it with are 1.25", and I rarely plan to carry more than 2 bikes.

The reason why I am considering a 2" hitch is because there is a slight chance in the future that I may need a 2" hitch, but this is unlikely.

However, if I choose the 2" hitch and purchase a 2" to 1.25" adapter (so that I can use my bike rack), is there a significant disadvantage to using an adapter? Some individuals have told me that this is just fine, while others have said that the adapter will add a noticeable amount of play that can be avoided (by sticking with a 1.25").

I have a 1.25" hitch on my volvo wagon and that puppy is well built and heavy duty. I would not hang an even heavier chunk of metal from a high MPG car just because you could need it to tow a boat... lots of empty SUVs are driving around on that unfulfilled promise.

If a bike wiggles around a little on a hitch, it's the flimsy bike's fault. Think of all the energy made to make its frame a pound lighter, and you want to negate that with an obscenely heavy duty hitch...
 
I have a 1.25" receiver hitch on my CR-V, and have never needed anything larger. You shouldn't tow with an adapter. You can use an adapter for accessories (like bike racks), but you shouldn't tow with one. 1.25" hitch plugs are readily available.

What would you need a 2" receiver tube for in the future?

Only reason I even thought about a 2" is the possibility of using a cargo box.

Also, I am considering the 1upUSA 2-bike model, which requires a 2".
