i saw some gtx HM 10-40 for 7 bucks a jug on clearance at china mart and i am going to mix 3 quarts of it with 1.5 qts of 5-30 in a cavalier with 190k...i think it would be ok for summer in NH, any comments would be welcome

Ive done this. For that Oil Change, you will have 7.5W-35 Oil... Wont hurt anything, but your Mental state, as it did me.

What viscosity calculator did you use to come up with those numbers? It doesn't work out as simply as adding up the 2 and dividing in half.

I added the two and divided in half, proportionate to the quantity of each grade being utilized.

Are you SURE its not Oversimplifying it? I know there is a Science to it, but i like Math...

You over simplified it. I had a link to a viscosity calculator I was using, however the link is dead. You need to plug in certain numbers from the oil you plan on mixing spec sheets. It is not as simple as adding and dividing by 2. I do mix oils sometimes, and that calculator gave me a good idea of what the end product was. I wish the link was still good.

Search oil viscosity calculators. One of the members here has a website with a viscosity calculator I think. widman or something like that is his name. HTH

There won't be a problem mixing. My point was getting the end viscosity is not as simple as adding and dividing to find an average. It is a little more involved than that. Hopefully someone will post a link to a good viscosity calculator.

It depends on how much hair splitting you need [which is NOBODY].
Neither of the above methods will be exact, BTW.

Either is close enough.

chet - Your mix is fine. Or even use less of the 10-40 in the mix.
If she is not burning or leaking right now, there is no reason to go too heavy.

3 qt 10w40

1.5 qt 5w30

10x3 = 30
5x1.5 = 7.5
30+7.5 = 37.5 / 4.5 = 8.3

40x3 = 120
30x1.5 = 45
120+45 = 165 / 4.5 = 36.6

New Viscosity = 8.3w36.6

I'd use either Castrol or Valvoline 5w30 in the mix due to the additive pack, assuming the 5w30 you are using is regular (non HM) dino.
