Hi thanks in advance. I have a 96 Ranger with the 2.3 and 5 spd manual. It had 168K miles on it. When I first start it in the morning it starts fine but when I engage it and start to drive when I touch the go pedal it stutters in 1rst gear and sometimes in 2nd. After it does it it is fine. And it only doest this the first two times I accelerate. It is not throwing any codes. I have replaced the air and fuel filters, and it had a tune up with new plugs within the last year. I use gas that I think is good and try to go to Shell when I can. I live in Florida and its parked overnight in a garage, so I don't think the temp has much to do with it. It does seem to get bad gas mileage to me for a 4 cyl and a stick. I get 19.5 to 21.5 in city and 23 or 24 on highway. The truck is also 2wd. Thanks again.

How old are your O2's??
I'm thinking you could start by cleaning out you throttle body and possibly replace your oh 2's, but I have know way of knowing if that will cure your symptoms.
All sorts of things may be the actual problem. You coolant or air temp sensor may be whacky.
Your fuel pump may be getting weak, or have a plugged filter.

I was thinking the coolant temp sensor being out of range also, but I didn't mention it since there are no codes stored.
The coolant sensor can be off enough to cause this and not throw a code. With your symptoms, and/or hard starting, that would be the first place I would look.
Ok thanks guys, I had no idea a coolant sensor could even cause those symptoms. Here is something else the truck is doing which I don't know if its related or not. I notice this usually when im shifting gears or coming to a stop that my RPM's will kick up and run pretty high I dont have a tach but im guess at least 2500. Well when it does this the A/C shuts off and I either have to tap the gas a couple times or turn the A/C off and back on for it to come back down to normal. For some reason the car is running lean. Depending on the programming in the PCM the O2s won't be considered usually until the coolant temp is over 140F. Until then it is running off of fixed tables in the program. So if something changes in the air supply or fuel supply then you get the lean running when cold and a stumble.
