Here's a funny Rock Auto shipping setup for spark plugs

I can understand some things, but spark plugs? That's a tell right there. They've got it all in one location, but that's not profitable.
They work with dozens (??) of partner warehouses so it makes sense that they try and treat all of them equally. As I mentioned above, I'm convinced their system is designed to split multiple part orders to do this but sometimes it gets stupid.

Yeah, treat them equally, but throw me under the bus?

No thanks.

I understand what you’re saying though.

In simple terms - without reading too in-depth at that thread - presumably individual cities "collect" sales tax directly and Rockauto has no desire to deal with hundreds or more entities for collection and repayment. Most states handle sales tax at the state level, even if localities have their own 'chunk'. You pay that state in a single lump payment with the distribution breakdown and the state disperses it.
Did you read it? It had to do whether RA actually (or rather, conceptually I suppose) had a "presence" in AZ.

One relevant quote:

"RockAuto has complied with Arizona’s Transaction Privilege Tax since the revision went live in 2019. But then, something odd happened. The Arizona Department of Revenue (ADOR) ran an audit on RockAuto’s sales in the period between April 1, 2013, and April 30, 2019. ADOR had concluded that RockAuto actually did have a physical presence in Arizona and, as such, should have been paying sales tax in Arizona before 2019. How much did ADOR want? $11 million, which covers the taxes and penalties that the state says it missed out on."

Colorado has an incredibly stupid scheme now varying from city to city and I fear we will chase off online retailers who just don't want to deal with it. I'm hoping AI and/or excellent mapping will save us. Essentially every single address has to be categorized by county and city (if applicable).

My only Rock Auto complaint has been the circuitous routing my packages have taken the past few times I have ordered from them.. Totally not a fault of Rock Auto, but nevertheless it is happening. Currently I am expecting (today) a shipment that has taken ten days to get here from Rochester NY. USPS has sent it via Indianapolis, Lexington KY, Louisville KY, Indianapolis (again) and eventually to three different facilities here in the Chicago area. Finally it is marked as "out for delivery". Good thing I wasn't really in a hurry for it.

I've never had a problem w RA parts or shipping. I am thankful that most of the time the shipping is usually early.

I purchased a set of four Sunsong brake hoses from Rock Auto. Three were made in Thailand and one was made in China, but at least they were all at one Wharehouse.

I ordered 2 Centric rotors, 1 was made China and the other USA, all same warehouse.

You actually found an aftermarket rotor made in the US? Which was one was newer?

Almost nobody has made rotors here in YEARS! The only US-made aftermarket rotorsI know of are the Advics rotors, but those are mostly for cars where Advics is already the OE supplier.

Rotors were for an 07 Impala, no clue which one was newer. The US made Centric was in a black box though. Idk, I thought it was odd as well.

I recently got some Wagner brake pads which were made in USA, from Rock Auto. On clearance sale too, for $18 a box. Once I'd installed them, I decided I liked them so much I ordered another set. They can sit on the basement shelf until I wear out the first set!

Yeah they still make pads in the US, but not rotors :sneaky:

Couple months ago I ordered two genuine AcDelco windshield washer fluid pumps for my Chevy truck from Rockauto.

I paid pretty penny for the washer pumps by choosing AcDelco because based on user reviews, all other aftermarket pumps wear out really quickly and do not last. So I knew I had to get AcDelco or gm genuine.

So I ordered two genuine AcDelco pumps from rockauto…. or I thought I did.

The pumps arrived on time, but one of them was not AcDelco. The AcDelco package was opened, the tape was missing from the packaging, and some weird pump that I could not figure out the brand was inside it, it had no AcDelco logo or stickers on it,

I went back and forth with rockauto for a replacement, but they kept saying it was a genuine AcDelco pump and they will not send a replacement, even after I sent them photos of the opened AcDelco packaging, and pictures of no logos on the pump.

So with that being said, I installed both pumps on my truck, and the fake pump did not even work at all. I figured at this point I won’t even bother rockauto.

From that point on, I will never buy anything from rockauto never again. This wasn’t the first crazy experience I had with rockauto, and I wasn’t up for more after the washer pump incident.

You can’t trust rock auto anymore. They use to be good about 15 years ago from what I remember.

You literally have better luck buying car parts from eBay nowadays.

Same spark plug number different countries of manufacture?

I bought six ac delco spark plugs from Rockauto and half were made in France and half were made in the US. There are very slight differences like the diameter of the electrode and how deep the plug is on the end that goes into the cylinder. Even one of the US plugs is different from the other two. Do you think I should just call some parts store and see if I can get 3 more of the same?
