I'm looking at a Topo map of my area. I know that a small black square is a house. My house is a small black square. But every 5 or so houses is a Red or Purple square and I can't find that on the legend. My next door neighbors house is a Red square.
Can Anybody tell me what the difference between the red and black square?

Thanks

I read that purple means new since last printing-- but they quit the purple on newest stuff.

That almost makes sense. I bet your on the right track.

The houses in my area started as Jackrabbit homesteads in the late 40's and early 50's. Basically the county put names in one hat and property numbers in another hat and thats how you got your lot. You then had x amount of years to build your cabin/house. All the older houses were built during this time. I do know that my next door neighbors is a little older than mine by a few years.

Maybe the Red ones were the ones built in the first year of the homestead thing?

Purple means it's part of the revision. Black structures are from the original series. If you look at the bottom right of the map, it will indicate the revision date in purple, probably in the 70s or 80s, with the original map edition above; ie, something along the lines of:

1966
PHOTOREVISED 1988 (in purple)

The newer maps don't have purple because they're an entirely new series, IRC 1996 or newer.

EDIT: Details about the revisions are in purple, located on the bottom center of the map. The base map details are on the bottom left of the map. Hope this help.
