Help with a math problem.

I'm absolutly math stupid and so is the store that I bought something from.

I bought item "A". It cost $100+ 8% sales tax.

This would be $108.
I had a $40 store credit so I only had to pay $68. $60 for item "A" and $8 sales tax on the $100.

Fair enough.

I returned Item "A" unused the next day and bought item "B". I never saw any $$$ in my hand as the return and new sale were done on a cash register.

Item "B" cost $40 +8% sales tax.

How much change should I have gotten back from the store including the store credit? The store is saying $11 but doing math in my head I think more like $60.

60 and then a couple bucks for the sales tax...technically you should have gotten a 40 gift card and 20ish dollars cash....and im not math literate either!

About $65. 108 - 43(includes 8% tax) = 65

You should have gotten a total of $64.80 back.

You gave them $108.00 ($100 + 8.00 tax)
You bought 43.20. ($40 + 3.20 tax)

A difference of $64.80.

I assume you had a receipt for the return? Some states like MA do not give back the sales tax on a return with no receipt. I assume it goes into a black hole that ends up at the state capital.

I don't mean to be evil, but this is very simple math and I don't think it is acceptable to throw up your hands and say "I am math illiterate," or "terrible at math."

I I have the numbers right, you should have received $108.00, less $43.20. That number is $64.80. Perhaps forty of that should be in the form of a gift card. Hope my subtraction is correct.

They'll never give you that in cash; it defeats the purpose of the store credit. So, $64.80 - $40 (s.c.) = $24.80 (cash)

To sum up: You should get $40 store credit, plus, $24.80 cash.

Next time you should do 2 transactions:

First, return item "A" to get full credit, some in cash(if you paid cash) and store gift card.

Then buy item "B" and pay with store gift card plus some cash(or credit card).

This time, clearly they shorted change you $53.80.

Don't ever feel bad about asking to do the whole transaction independently. For example:

a) return the part that you don't want and get your money back. That would be the store credit of $40, your cash outlay of $68.

this ends that transaction and you're fully refunded.

b) make the purchase of the second item that you came for. It will be a straightfoward $40 plus 8%($3.20) for a cash payment of $43.80.

Keeping things simple is the way to conduct business.
